This year the Vols opened up with a couple of wins, taking out Syracuse and East Tennessee State in their first two outings. Tennessee then fell 44-41 at home in overtime versus Georgia but then bounced back with a blowout win over UAB. Game five was another overtime affair, but this time a road win over Mississippi State 41-34. In that one Tennessee got 466 yards and 24 first downs from their offense but also had three turnovers and went a tepid 5-of-14 on third-down conversion attempts.
In the game versus Arkansas last weekend, Tennessee got a major scare but everything worked out well in the end. The Vols were up by 10 heading into the final quarter and ended up eking out a 34-31 home victory. QB Joey Aguilar was 16-of-25 for 221 yards and a TD, while DeSean Bishop topped the rushers on 14 carries for 146 yards and a score of his own. Leading the receivers was Braylon Staley with six catches for 109 yards. Miles Kitselman caught the TD pass among his five grabs for 56 yards as well.
Over on the Alabama side, they had a tricky matchup with Florida State in their opener, eventually falling 31-17. The Tide stormed back with a blowout win over LA-Monroe in game two, then beat Wisconsin, Georgia and Vanderbilt over the next trio. In the 30-14 victory over the Commodores, Alabama posted 486 yards of offense with 26 first downs and 7.0 yards per play. The defense gave up just 5-of-11 on third downs and had three takeaways on the other side as well.
Matched up against Missouri last weekend, Alabama had their own scare against a tricky team on the road. The Tide scored in every quarter—and also gave up points in every quarter—during a tight 27-24 victory. QB Ty Simpson finished 23-of-31 for 200 yards and three scores. Leading rusher Jamarion Miller posted 20 totes for 85 yards and Lotzeir Brooks caught four balls for 58 yards in the win.
Heading into Week 8, Bray Hubbard leads the Southeastern Conference for interceptions (3) this season.
Tennessee Volunteers Player Prop Facts
Heading into Week 8, Chris Brazzell II leads the Southeastern Conference for receiving touchdowns (7) this season.
Alabama ranks 9th among FBS teams for red zone percentage this season (96.4).
Alabama ranks 15th among FBS teams for passing yards per game this season (304.5).
Tennessee ranks 1st among FBS teams for Q1 points per game this season (16.7).
Tennessee has played in the equal-highest number of games that went to overtime this season (2).
I’ll stay with Alabama, but this one’s something of a coin flip cover-wise. The Tide escaped a road matchup versus Missouri last weekend, notching 325 total yards, 22 first downs and an admittedly tepid 6-of-15 result on third downs. The 3-of-3 on fourth-down tries was huge, as was the 1-of-10 on third downs allowed by the Tide’s defense. During this five-game win streak Alabama continues to chug along amid some very difficult competition. They’ve scored 24 or more points in each of those five games as well.
As for Tennessee, they were monsters in the running game during the home win over Arkansas last weekend, tallying 264 yards on the ground on the way to 7.5 yards per play. The Volunteers went just 2-of-9 on third downs however, and the team committed 10 penalties for 78 yards in a sloppy overall game. The defense also gave up 240 rushing yards on the other side, but the three fumble recoveries helped ease the sting. This will be one of the weekend’s marquis matchups, so don’t miss this game.
