Stony Brook Seawolves Betting Preview

The Seawolves engineered a huge turnaround in 2024, building themselves into a contender throughout the course of the season. Stony Brook had a winless season in 2023—the first in school history—and fired head coach Chuck Priore. In came Billy Cosh, who immediately brought the program back to relevance. The Seawolves would end up going 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the Coastal Athletic Association, giving them a sixth-place finish behind Richmond, Rhode Island, Villanova, Delaware and New Hampshire. Following a nice 8-2 start that featured losses to only Marshall and Villanova however, Stony Brook lost their final two games (both by one score and a combined nine points) at New Hampshire and versus Monmouth.

In 2025 Cosh is back for his second year at the helm and he’ll have his coordinators back with him. The staff will retain four All-Conference players from last year’s squad: RB Roland Dempster, K Enda Kirby, OL Niko Papic and LB AJ Roberts. They’ll also retain three of their five starting offensive linemen, but both quarterbacks who played last season are gone. Furthermore, the defense could use a shot in the arm after giving up 30 or more points in all four defeats.

Over on the San Diego State side, they had a much more disappointing campaign in 2024. The Aztecs would go just 3-9 overall and 2-5 in the Mountain West. That result would place San Diego State just two spots out of the basement in the conference standings. The team landed ahead of only Wyoming (2-5) and Nevada (0-7). Through six games, San Diego State’s season didn’t look horrific—they stood at 3-3 overall. Six straight losses followed afterward however, as the Aztecs dropped games to Washington State, Boise State, New Mexico, UNLV, Utah State and Air Force in succession.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, San Diego State will give Sean Lewis another shot in his second year as head coach. Associate head coach Zac Barton returns as well, and we’ll get a new defensive coordinator in Rob Aurich. This will be the Aztecs’ final season in the Mountain West Conference, as they’ll make the move to the Pac-12 next year. There’s plenty of turnover to deal with this year, as QBs AJ Duffy (New Haven) Javance Tupou’ata-Johnson (North Dakota) and Danny O’Neil (Wisconsin) have jumped ship. Bert Emanuel (Central Michigan) and Jayden Denegal (Michigan) arrive to help bolster the position.

I’m going to stay with Stony Brook. The Seawolves won’t be taking anyone by surprise this year, but they’ve got more than enough talent to post another nice season. It’ll take a few games before we know what we’ve got at QB for Stony Brook. That said, the talent surrounding that position should help elevate the offense regardless. Jasiah Williams (51 receptions) and Cal Redman (32 receptions) are big subtractions at receiver, so the Seawolves have a lot of volume to make up. This isn’t too difficult an opener for Stony Brook however, and I like the team to come out of the gate swinging.
