A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the Southern Miss vs Arkansas State game
Southern Miss went a tepid 2-2 in their first four games of the season, falling versus Mississippi State and Louisiana Tech alongside wins over Jackson State and App State in that quartet. Since then the Golden Eagles have found their groove however, taking out Jacksonville State, Georgia Southern and Louisiana in the next three outings. In the win over the Cajuns, the Golden Eagles went just 2-of-13 on third downs with two turnovers and just 14 first downs but the defense kept the team in the lead with three turnovers and a solid overall effort.
In their latest matchup versus LA-Monroe on October 25, the Eagles held a modest 21-14 lead by the break. Southern Miss ended up scoring in every quarter however—including 14 in each of the final three—during a 49-21 win. QB Braylon Braxton had an 18-of-23 line for 248 yards and four touchdowns while Robert Briggs carried seven times for 55 yards. Matt Jones added 12 totes for 42 yards and a pair of scores on the ground. Tops in receiving was Tychaun Chapman with three catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Over on the Red Wolves’ side, they were able to open the year with a win over Southeast Missouri State. Arkansas State hit the skids after that however, falling versus Arkansas, Iowa State, Kennesaw State and LA Monroe. The next three were wins over Texas State, South Alabama and Georgia Southern, though. In the 34-24 win over the Eagles on October 25, the Red Wolves amassed 482 yards with 266 rush yards, 29 first downs and 11-of-18 on third down tries but did have two turnovers and nine penalties overall along the way.
Arkansas State kept their winning ways going versus Troy on Saturday. The Red Wolves jumped out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead then added a couple of field goals in the second half for a 23-10 victory in the end. QB Jaylen Raynor put up a 21-of-29 line for 247 yards and two touchdowns while Kenyon Clay had 16 carries for 40 yards as the team’s leading rusher. Tops in receiving was Hunter Summers with four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.
I’ll stick with Arkansas State. The Red Wolves slowed way down offensively after their big first quarter in the win over Troy last weekend, eventually gathering just 297 yards, 50 rush yards, 17 first downs and 4-of-13 on third-down tries. Arkansas State also lost a couple of fumbles, but the defense kept them ahead with 187 yards and 5-of-17 allowed on third downs on the other side. The two takeaways didn’t hurt either. The Red Wolves have now won four straight games but a couple of those have been pretty close finishes.
As for Southern Miss, they didn’t have much trouble with LA-Monroe in their last game. The Eagles have scored 38 or more points in three of the last four outings, so the Red Wolves defense has their work cut out for them.
