Old Dominion started out with a rough matchup against a great Indiana team in their opener, falling 27-14 in the end. The Monarchs would then rattle off a string of wins, taking out NC Central, Virginia Tech, Liberty and Coastal Carolina in the next quartet. In the win over the Chanticleers, the Monarchs offense bagged a whopping 619 total yards (302 rushing) with 30 first downs and a nice 7-of-14 result on third-down conversions. The defense held Coastal Carolina to just 189 yards on the other side as well.
In last weekend’s matchup with Marshall, the Monarchs carried a 7-7 tie into the second quarter then gave up 34 points over the next two frames in an eventual 48-24 loss. QB Colton Joseph finished 15-of-28 for 266 yards, one TD and two picks. Leading the rush was Maurki James with 12 carries for 83 yards and a TD (Joseph also had a rush score), while top receiver Tre Brown had a 71-yard TD catch.
Over on the James Madison side, they kicked off their season with a victory over Weber State before taking a game two loss on the road versus Louisville. The Dukes would then hit a win streak with victories over Liberty, Georgia Southern and Georgia State in the next three outings. In the 14-7 win over the Panthers, the Dukes offense posted just 74 passing yards and went a rough 4-of-14 on third-down tries. The 11 penalties for 100 yards didn’t help matters, either. That said, Georgia State was even worse in that department (15 penalties for 114 yards).
Matched up against Louisiana last weekend, the Dukes were facing a seven-point deficit in the locker room. James Madison woke up after that, rattling off a 17-0 run in the second for a 24-14 comeback win. QB Alonza Barnett was 26-of-40 for 290 yards, three scores and an interception. Top rusher Wayne Knight carried 20 times for 111 yards, and Landon Ellis had a career day with six grabs for 120 yards and three of the scores to top the receivers in the win.
Heading into Week 8, Alonza Barnett III leads James Madison for touchdowns (5) this season.
Heading into Week 8, Tre Brown III leads the Sun Belt Conference for yards per reception (20.7) this season.
James Madison ranks T4th among FBS teams for yards allowed per game this season (229.0).
James Madison ranks 4th among FBS teams for 1st downs against this season (73).
Old Dominion ranks T11th among FBS teams for rushing yards per game this season (238.0).
Old Dominion ranks 12th among FBS teams for yards per game this season (488.5).
I’ll go with James Madison. It took the Dukes a little while to get going against a not-so-great Louisiana team last weekend, but everything worked out in the end. JMU had three turnovers and 10 penalties for 102 yards overall, which were the main culprits in the early deficit. On defense the Dukes looked much better, giving up 288 yards, 11 first downs and 3-of-14 on third-down tries. That makes four straight wins for James Madison, but they’ve been pretty tepid on the scoreboard over the last two weeks—for what it’s worth, anyway.
As for ODU, they got into turnover trouble (three lost fumbles; two picks) and went just 4-of-14 on third downs in their 24-point loss to Marshall over the weekend. The Monarchs had been on a four-game win streak prior to that, scoring quite well in the process. This one should be a fairly high total as well.
