Ohio State hasn’t had a ton of difficulties this year. They’ve plowed through their first eight games on the schedule, taking out Texas, Grambling State, Ohio, Washington, MInnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin in the first seven. In the 34-0 blowout road win versus Wisconsin on October 18, the Buckeyes amassed 491 total yards, 393 pass yards, 7.0 yards per play and 26 first downs. The defense was even better with 144 yards, 3.1 yards per play, nine first downs and just 2-of-11 on third-down conversions allowed in the victory.
In their latest outing versus Penn State on Saturday, the Buckeyes started out relatively slowly with a modest 17-14 halftime edge. Ohio State woke up after the break however, rolling to a 21-0 run and a 38-14 win in the end. QB Julian Sayin had a 20-of-23 line for 316 yards and four touchdowns while leading rusher Bo Jackson had 13 carries for 105 yards. Tops in receiving was Carnell Tate with five grabs for 124 yards and a score. Jeremiah Smith was close behind on six catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns of his own.
Over on the Purdue side, they opened up the year with two wins over Ball State and Southern Illinois. The Boilermakers have hit the skids since then however. Purdue lost to USC, Notre Dame, Illinois, Minnesota, Northwestern and Rutgers in a series of tough matchups over the next half-dozen outings. In the loss to Rutgers 27-24 on October 25, Purdue went just 1-of-9 on third downs with 14 first downs and 128 passing yards. The defense gave up 543 yards on the other side with 22 first downs and 7.2 yards per play in the three-point defeat.
Purdue was last in action on Saturday versus Michigan. The Boilermakers were within four points heading into the final quarter but eventually lost 21-16 in the end. QB Ryan Browne posted 133 yards and a score on 19-of-24 passing in the road defeat with Malachi Thomas leading the rush on 15 carries for 68 yards. Michael Jackson was the leading receiver with his 58 yards from six catches.
I’ll stick with the Buckeyes. It’s tough to pick against Ohio State right now, as they’re plowing through lesser competition with regularity. The Buckeyes had a modest first half versus Penn State over the weekend, but eventually tallied 480 yards, 22 first downs, 8.7 yards per play and 6-of-9 on third-down tries. The defense gave up just 200 yards on the other side with 15 first downs and 3.3 yards per play. Ohio State’s D has kept opponents below 17 points in all eight games so far this season, so it’s tough to imagine Purdue finding any room at all on the scoreboard this weekend.
Speaking of the Boilermakers, they had a couple of takeaways versus Michigan but gave up a whopping 253 rush yards in the five-point defeat. Still, it wasn’t a bad showing. This weekend isn’t going to get any easier. Purdue’s only hope is to hinge themselves on time of possession and try to keep the game semi-close.
