Mississippi State Bulldogs Betting Preview

The Bulldogs opened the year on a nice run with four straight wins. Those came versus Southern Miss, Arizona State, Alcorn State and Northern Illinois in succession. Mississippi State would hit a losing streak after that though, falling to Tennessee, Texas A&M and Florida in the next trio. In the 23-21 road loss to the Gators, the Bulldogs mustered 468 total yards, 324 pass yards, 22 first downs and 8-of-15 on third-down tries but also had a couple of turnovers along the way to the defeat.

In last weekend’s big matchup versus Texas, Mississippi State held a 31-14 edge going into the fourth quarter. Following a 24-7 final frame however, the Bulldogs went to overtime and eventually lost a stunner at home 45-38. QB Blake Shapen logged 381 yards and four scores on 26-of-42 passing while leading rusher Davon Booth had 24 totes for 99 yards. Booth was also the team’s leading receiver with three catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Bremen Thompson had six catches for 76 yards and two scores in the home defeat.

Arkansas Razorbacks Betting Preview

Over on the Arkansas side, they started out with a couple of wins over Alabama A&M and Arkansas State—each by significant margins. A losing stretch came after that though, as the Razorbacks racked up defeats courtesy of Ole Miss, Memphis, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Texas A&M. In the 45-42 home loss to the Aggies, the Razorbacks posted 527 yards, 268 rush yards, 8.1 yards per play and 25 first downs. Arkansas generated only 4-of-10 successes on third-down tries though, and had nine penalties for 71 yards in the defeat.

Matched up against Auburn last weekend, the Razorbacks scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and held a 24-18 advantage going into the final frame. Arkansas was outscored 17-0 the rest of the way however, ending up with a tough home loss 33-24. QB Taylen Green was 14-of-22 for 268 yards, one TD and three picks, while leading rusher Mike Washington had 12 totes for 41 yards. Rohan Jones had a nice day in the home loss with three catches for 127 yards and Raylen Sharpe added 63 yards and a TD off his two grabs.

Mississippi State vs Arkansas Prediction

I’ll lean toward Mississippi State. The Bulldogs need to shake off last weekend’s tough defeat, though. In that one Mississippi State struggled on third downs (6-of-19) and had just 63 rush yards and eight overall penalties. The defense gave up 356 passing yards and 22 first downs on the other side but did pretty well on third downs (8-of-20) themselves. Mississippi State seems to rise to the level of their opponents more often than not, as two of their last three games versus ranked teams have come down to one-score overtime finishes.

As for Arkansas, they lost the handle in the fourth quarter versus Auburn last weekend and ended up with four turnovers and just 14 first downs. The Razorbacks’ last two games versus ranked teams were each decided by three points though, so they’ve got some fight in them as well. It’s tough telling how this game will go, but it should be a good one to watch.
