Zach Marshall was the leading receiver with five catches for 72 yards and a touchdown of his own in the winning effort.
Over on the Spartans’ side, they started out quite well themselves with a win over Western Michigan in the opener this year. After a two-point escape at home versus Boston College, Michigan State beat Youngstown State. Next came a losing streak however, as Michigan State would fall to USC, Nebraska and UCLA in the ensuing trio. In the Bruins loss, the Spartans could only gain 253 total yards (87 rushing) with 4.2 yards per play and 14 first downs. The defense gave up 238 rushing yards on the other side and couldn’t generate a takeaway.
Matched up against Indiana over the weekend, the Spartans gave up points in all four quarters—including 14 in both the second and third—along the way to a 38-13 road defeat. QB Aidan Chiles was 27-of-33 for 243 yards and one touchdown, while also leading the rush with eight carries for 48 yards in the loss. Nick Marsh was the team’s leading receiver with seven catches for 64 yards along the way.

The Spartans generated a respectable 293 pass yards and 5.9 yards per play, but the 19 first downs and 5-of-14 on third-down tries weren’t enough to keep pace. The Spartans defense gave up 464 yards (332 passing), 8.3 yards per play and 24 first downs on the other side. That makes four straight losses for Michigan State, and they’ve been outscored 38-13 in each of the last two. I don’t see them keeping up with the Wolverines in any meaningful capacity.
