Miami-Ohio RedHawks Betting Preview

The RedHawks weren’t able to do much of anything on offense versus Wisconsin in their opener this year, eventually falling 17-0 in a road shutout. Game two versus Rutgers was an even bigger blowout 45-17, then came a tight home loss to UNLV 41-38. Miami-OH finally got a win 38-0 versus Lindenwood in game four. Along the way the RedHawks managed to hold the opposition to just 146 yards (87 passing), 2.7 yards per play, nine first downs and 1-of-13 on third-down tries.

In last weekend’s meeting with Northern Illinois, Miami-OH was in trouble after the first quarter and a 14-0 deficit. The RedHawks stormed back from there however, notching 25 unanswered points in a 25-14 comeback victory. Dequan Finn logged a 14-of-26 line for 170 yards and a touchdown, while also leading the rushing attack with 21 carries for 90 yards. Jordan Brunson posted 20 carries for 73 yards, and top receiver Kamryn Perry had three catches for 76 yards in the road victory effort.

Akron Zips Betting Preview

Over on the Zips’ side, they weren’t able to score any points in their first two games of the year as they fell 10-0 versus Wyoming and 68-0 in the Nebraska meeting. Akron got close in a 31-28 loss versus UAB, then finally got a win over Duquesne 51-7. The Toledo game was another loss however, this time 45-3. The Zips offense posted just 145 total yards (79 passing) in that one with 2.4 yards per play, 11 first downs and 2-of-15 on third-down conversions.

Matched up against Central Michigan over the weekend, the Zips posted a 3-0 deficit early but were ahead by the end of the second quarter. Akron kept it going with two more scores in the third quarter and held on for the win 28-22. Ben Finley threw for 18-of-29 for 252 yards, three scores and a pick. Top rusher Jordan Gant had 32 totes for 176 yards and Kyan Mason led the receivers on 125 yards and a touchdown.

Miami-OH vs Akron Prediction

I’m going with Akron here. The Zips looked pretty good last weekend versus Central Michigan, notching 417 yards, 6.1 yards per play, 20 first downs and a nice 9-of-15 effort on third downs. The defense posted a 4-of-12 success rate on third downs but did give up 238 rush yards as well. It was a nice bounce-back game following a 45-3 loss to Toledo on September 27. It was also Akron’s third time scoring 28 or more points in the last four games.

As for Miami-OH, they handled Northern Illinois pretty well. The defense had a couple of takeaways alongside 220 yards, 4.3 yards per play, 11 first downs and 4-of-14 on third-down conversions allowed. That makes 25 or more points scored in three straight weeks for the RedHawks, following a couple of tough matchups to start the season. This weekend’s game could turn into a fairly high-scoring affair as well. Cover-wise I like Akron to power it out, though.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Akron Zips +10
