Pop Watson and RJ Johnson will be expected to lead the charge under center, but it looks like Warner is going to get the first crack at the starting job. The Minutemen hit the portal hard, upgrading at RB and WR with the additions of Justin Williams-Thomas (Marshall) and Jordan Washington (Murray State) in the backfield and Joseph Griffin (Wisconsin) on the outside. On defense, Tyler Martin is back after leading UMass with 103 tackles, but after having one of the worst overall defenses in the country, UMass raided the transfer portal on that side of the ball as well to improve.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights come into the 2026 campaign looking to take another step forward after going 5-7 in 2025. Dylan Lonergan transfers in from Boston College to take over QB duties for the Scarlet Knights after going for 12 touchdowns to 5 interceptions, Antwan Raymond is back after logging over 1,200 rushing yards and 21 TDs across the last two seasons and KJ Duff i also back after leading the Scarlet Knights with 7 touchdowns. On defense, only two of Rutgers’ top 11 tacklers are back but that may not be a horrible thing considering how leaky this Rutgers defense was, which is surprising from a Greg Schiano coached unit.

I’m on UMass and the points in this one. I just think this is a case of too many points with Rutgers who are making changes on the fly in their own right. Don’t get me wrong, UMass got smacked around a lot last year, but I think UMass is better than what they’ve shown and I look for the Minutemen to at least stay somewhat competitive here. Give me UMass and the points.
