Lindenwood had a pretty mediocre campaign last year in head coach Jed Stugart’s seventh season. The Lions would ultimately go 5-7 overall with a 4-4 run in conference play. The Lions’ opening week opponent was the University of St. Thomas. Lindenwood was all tied up at 7-7 by halftime, then faded from there in an eventual loss 35-13. QB Nate Glantz threw for 318 yards and a score on 18-of-29 passing. Steve Hall was the leading rusher with 14 carries for 70 yards, and Jared Rhodes scored a TD among his 13 carries for 40 yards. Leading the receivers was Drew Krobath with five catches for 128 yards. John Anthony added four catches for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Over on the Mountaineers’ side, they’re coming off a pretty rough season in 2024. Appalachian State limped to a 5-6 overall run, going just 3-5 in Sun Belt Conference games. The Mountaineers landed in second-to-last place in the East Division with that effort, ahead of only Georgia State in the standings. Appalachian State posted a 2-4 run in their first half-dozen outings, then hit a 3-1 stretch with wins over Georgia State, Old Dominion and James Madison. The season ended with a loss at Georgia Southern, however.
Appalachian State held a 17-3 lead at halftime in their road matchup versus Charlotte last weekend in the opener. The Mountaineers scored another 17 points from there, eventually carving out a nice win 34-11. Quarterback AJ Swann managed to go 31-of-46 for 368 yards and three touchdowns. Rashod Dubinion was the leading rusher on 22 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown. Tops in receiving was Jaden Barnes with six grabs for 134 yards and a score of his own.
I’ll likely just stay with Appalachian State. The Mountaineers put together a pretty well-rounded effort last weekend in their opener win over Charlotte. In that one App State totaled a nice 586 yards of offense (404 passing) alongside 6.7 yards per play, 32 first downs and 7-of-15 on third-down conversions. On defense the Mountaineers were pretty darn good as well, giving up just 218 yards (142 passing), 4.0 yards per play, 15 first downs and 4-of-14 on third-down tries. The nine penalties for 98 yards didn’t help matters, but a cleaner game will go a long way this time. App State also bagged a pair of takeaways, so if they can keep things going versus Lindenwood this weekend the Mountaineers will be in a great spot. The Lions shouldn’t pose too much of a threat if all goes well. I like Appalachian State to control this one for pretty much the entire game, resulting in a smooth cover.
