Lamar Cardinals Betting Preview

The Cardinals had a pretty solid overall year in 2025, but their postseason run was dashed quickly. Lamar managed to go 8-5 overall and 5-3 in the Southland Conference, which put the team behind only Stephen F. Austin and Southeastern Louisiana in the standings. The Cardinals lost to Abilene Christian in the NCAA Division I First Round matchup 38-20 however, putting an end to their season.

This year Lamar opened up versus Abilene Christian on August 29. In that one The Cards played a tight game but ultimately came out on top 21-14. QB Aiden McCown posted a 17-of-32 line for 183 yards and three scores. Blake Thomas led the receivers on three catches for 44 yards and a score while Parker Jenkins had 56 yards on 14 carries.

Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Betting Preview

Over on the Louisiana side, they didn’t quite hammer out a winning record last season, but did make it to a bowl game. The Cajuns went 6-7 overall with a 5-3 stretch in the Sun Belt, landing in third place among the West Division behind Troy and Southern Miss. Louisiana got a berth in the 68 Ventures Bowl versus Delaware, a game which they lost 20-13.

Looking ahead to 2026, the Cajuns have head coach Michael Desormeaux back in the fold for his fifth season. He’ll get the full coaching staff back and seven returning starters on offense. That said, the defense has been retooled significantly. Nine starters from last year’s team are gone, but Louisiana has reloaded with in-house talent and relatively little reliance on the transfer portal.

Lamar vs Louisiana Prediction

I’ll stick with Louisiana, but this should be an interesting game regardless. The Cajuns had quite a bit of turnover on defense this year (most notably losing NFL draft pick Jaden Dugger) but they do have guys like Fitzgerald West and Brent Gordon returning to help guide the younger players. On offense, Lunch Winfield should be a strong performer, and he’s got nice weapons like Shelton Sampson alongside three returning offensive linemen.

As for Lamar, they were able to power past Abilene Christian thanks in part to the Wildcats’ 12 penalties for 106 yards. The Cardinals gained a tepid 4.2 yards per play though, and went just 5-of-15 on third downs. It’s going to take a much cleaner effort all around if Lamar wants to be competitive here.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns -20.5
