A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the Lafayette vs Oregon State game
The Leopards have had some pretty tricky matchups so far this year and haven’t done too badly all things considered. Lafayette opened with a loss to Bowling Green but then bounced back with three straight wins over Stonehill, Georgetown and Columbia. Game five was another loss, this time 38-28 versus Princeton. Lafayette would follow that up with a 14-point win over Fordham, gaining 402 yards of offense in the process alongside 19 first downs. The third-down conversions (4-of-13) could have been much better, though.
In their latest outing last weekend versus Bucknell, the Leopards didn’t have too much difficulty. Lafayette posted a modest 7-0 advantage in the first quarter, then proceeded to rattle off double-digit points in each of the final three quarters (including 27 in the third alone) on the way to a 62-24 win. Dean DeNobile finished 26-of-34 for 316 yards and a whopping five touchdowns while lead rusher Ethan Weber carried 11 times for 139 yards and two scores. Tops in receiving was Elijah Steward with six catches for 116 yards and two of the touchdowns in the winning effort.
Over on the Oregon State side, they’ve had some tricky matchups themselves so far this year—and have struggled overall. The Beavers lost to California, Fresno State and Texas Tech in their first three games, then got blown out by Oregon before a three-point loss to Houston. Game six was another loss, this time 27-23 versus App State. In that one the Beavers offense gained 456 yards—358 of those being through the air—but also had three turnovers and went a rough 4-of-11 on third-down tries.
Matched up against Wake Forest on Saturday, the Beavers were pummeled 25-0 in the first half alone. Oregon State didn’t get much better after the break, limping to a 39-14 loss by allowing points in every quarter. Maalik Murphy was 13-of-30 for 130 yards and a pick, while Anthony Hankerson rushed 22 times for 101 yards. David Wells was the team’s top receiver on six catches for 58 yards and a touchdown in the defeat.
Heading into Week 8, Trent Walker has the equal-most receptions without a receiving touchdown this season (45).
Oregon State ranks 130th among FBS teams for Q1 opponent points per game this season (10.6).
Oregon State ranks 130th among FBS teams for H1 opponent points per game this season (19.7).
I’ll likely stay with Lafayette, but I could see this one going the other way as well. The Leopards didn’t have too many issues in their latest win over Bucknell, tallying a whopping 670 total yards, 348 rushing yards, 9.7 yards per play and 27 first downs along the way. The defense gave up just 15 first downs on the other side and 3-of-14 on third-down tries. That gives Lafayette 24 or more points in each of the last six games. The 10-point loss to Princeton at home on September 27 seems a distant memory.
As for Oregon State, their defense held Wake Forest to just 1-of-9 on third downs and the team benefitted from 12 Deacons penalties—and they still got blown out at home last weekend. The Beavers had two turnovers, 3.9 yards per play and 5-of-17 on third-down tries in another rough effort. This is a great opportunity to finally get that first win, though.
