A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the East Texas A&M vs Florida State game
East Texas A&M posted a forgettable run last season. The Lions limped to a 3-9 overall record in head coach Clint Dolezel’s second year at the helm, going just 2-4 in the Southland Conference. East Texas A&M finished ahead of only Nicholls and Northwestern State in the standings, but it hardly mattered since the team is ineligible for postseason play until 2026-27 due to their transition to Division I. In any case, the Lions went 1-8 to start the year, beating only Northwestern State in that time. Following wins over Stephen F. Austin and Houston Christian, East Texas A&M lost to Incarnate Word to close out the year.
This season the Lions took on SMU in their opening game. After falling behind 14-0 early and giving up points in every quarter, East Texas A&M was left with a 42-13 blowout loss. QB Eric Rodriguez went just 14-of-30 for 191 yards and an interception. JaiSean McMillian added four carries for 31 yards to lead the rush, and Devin Matthews topped the receivers on four catches for 87 yards.
Over on the Florida State side, they also had a pretty miserable run in 2024 despite entering the campaign as the defending conference champs. The Seminoles were able to muster only a 2-10 overall record with a 1-7 run in the ACC, becoming the first team in the CFP era to move from double-digit wins to double-digit losses in successive seasons. It was also the first time since USC in 2018 that a defending power conference champion missed out on a bowl game, as FSU tumbled to the basement of the ACC standings. The only wins were over California on September 21 and Charleston Southern on November 23.
Fortunately for FSU, they came out of the gate strong this year and provided the first big upset of the season. In their matchup with Alabama, the Seminoles scored points in every quarter during a 31-17 victory at home. QB Thomas Castellanos was 9-of-14 through the air for 152 yards and also led the rush with 16 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown. Jaylin Lucas had two catches for 66 yards to lead the receivers, and Micahi Danzy had three rushes for 56 yards and a touchdown of his own.
I’m likely just going to stay with FSU. Probably avoiding this one though, as the line will be pretty crazy just about everywhere. In any case, the Seminoles are riding high after besting an excellent Alabama team in their opener. FSU ran the ball very well in that one (230 yards) but didn’t do so well with the pass (152 yards). The 5-of-12 on third downs wasn’t great either but you can’t argue with the end result.
As for the Lions, they had a rough opener during a sloppy game featuring 19 total penalties (11 from East Texas A&M. Each team coughed up three turnovers too, and the third-down efficiency wasn’t great all around. The Lions are in for another tough game this weekend, but may get in there if FSU has that proverbial “big-win hangover”—relatively speaking of course. The Seminoles will still win this one handily.
