A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the Duke vs UConn game
The Blue Devils went just 1-2 in their first three games this year, beating Elon ahead of losses to Illinois and Tulane. Duke would hit a win streak after that however, taking out NC State, Syracuse and Cal before losing to Georgia Tech. In the loss to the Yellow Jackets, the Blue Devils amassed 441 yards, 373 pass yards, 26 first downs and 7-of-15 on third-down tries. The defense gave up 6-of-12 on third downs along with 376 total yards, 21 first downs and 6.6 yards per play on the other side during the nine-point defeat.
In their most recent matchup versus Clemson on Saturday, Duke jumped out to a nice 21-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. That lead was gone by halftime though, and Duke had to power through the final two quarters for a 46-45 thriller of a win. QB Darian Mensah finished 27-of-41 for 361 yards and four touchdowns while Nate Sheppard added 13 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown. Cooper Barkate had six catches for 127 yards and a score of his own during the victory effort.
Over on the Huskies’ side, they also went just 1-2 in their first three games. The win was over Central Connecticut State, then came losses to Syracuse and Delaware. UConn hit the right track from there with wins over Ball State, Buffalo, FIU and Boston College in the next four then fell in a tough one versus Rice 37-34. In that defeat, the Huskies gave up 491 yards total, 300 rush yards, 6.3 yards per play and 20 first downs. The offense added 449 total yards but went just 5-of-17 on third-down conversion attempts during the loss.
UConn last appeared on the field over the weekend in a matchup versus UAB. The Huskies were up 24-0 by the end of the first half in that one, then scored a couple more times in the third on the way to a 38-19 win. QB Joe Fagnano finished 23-of-30 for 267 yards and four scores while Camryn Edwards had 15 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown. Leading the team in receiving was Skyler Bell with eight catches for 149 yards and three touchdowns in the winning effort for the Huskies.
I’m going to try Duke here, but you could certainly make a case either way. The Blue Devils are coming off a wild win over Clemson though, and could use a more manageable game here. In the win over the Tigers Duke posted 439 yards and 6.9 yards per play but went just 3-of-14 on third downs along with nine penalties as a team. The defense gave up 560 yards on the other side but stood tall on third downs with a 3-of-10 success rate. During this current 4-1 run, Duke has notched 38 or more points in all four wins.
As for UConn, they’ve been scoring well themselves with 34 or more points in four straight. We should have a fun matchup here, and it could very well end up as a high total.
