The Line: Betting Odds: Yulia Putintseva -129 / Maria Sakkari +100
Yulia Putintseva and Maria Sakkari meet in the first round of the WTA Bad Homburg Open in Germany. The match is scheduled for Sunday, June 22. Here’s our Yulia Putintseva vs Maria Sakkari prediction. This preview will also include a Yulia Putintseva vs Maria Sakkari pick.
Yulia Putintseva vs Maria Sakkari Preview
Yulia Putintseva is unseeded and will compete at the Bad Homburg Open, which is the last WTA 500 event on grass before Wimbledon. Putintseva has never taken part in this tournament before. This will be her first appearance. Putintseva won her first grass-court title of her career in Birmingham 12 months ago. The Kazakh has not been able to emulate that success in this year’s swing thus far and won’t defend her title in the same city this time because the tournament was downgraded to a WTA 125K this season. Therefore, Putitnseva has competed at Queen’s and Nottingham in recent weeks, losing in the first round and second round, respectively. She has a 15-15 record in 2025, and is a long way off from her career-best season in 2024 when she won 40 matches and lifted a grass title.
Maria Sakkari is also unseeded and continues her Wimbledon preparations by playing in her third grass event of the season. Sakkari lost in the last 16 in Den Bosch to eventual champion Elise Mertens and disappointingly, was knocked out in the qualifying round of the Berlin Open last weekend by Rebeka Masarova. Sakkari has experienced a massive drop in rankings this season, falling to a lowly 86th when she was ranked in the Top 10 not more than two years ago. The Greek has been able to win 14 matches and lost 18 in all competitions. While her Wimbledon spot is under threat, if Sakkari can not arrest this slide, then she is in danger of missing out on the main draws of the biggest tournaments.
Yulia Putintseva vs Maria Sakkari Head-To-Head
Putintseva and Sakkari have played three times at the WTA level. Sakkari leads the head-to-head 2-1, with all three meetings taking place on hard courts. Putintseva’s solitary win in the series was nine years ago in Tokyo. This will be their first clash in five years.
Yulia Putintseva vs Maria Sakkari Prediction
I’m leaning Putintseva here, but it’s probably wise to go with the overs. Neither player has looked in fine fettle throughout the season. Sakkari is in danger of falling out of the Top 100, which was unthinkable a couple of summers ago. However, tennis is a sport that doesn’t have a rearview mirror, and it moves on quickly. Momentum can be fleeting, and we are seeing that with these two women, who dearly need a deep run to gain confidence before Wimbledon.
