Victoria Mboko is making her main draw debut in Montreal. The 18-year-old was offered a wild card to compete at the Canadian Open and kicked off the tournament with a bang. Mboko defeated Australia’s Kimberly Birrell 7-5, 6-3 in 95 minutes. 

Mboko hit 15 aces to four double faults in the match. She landed 63% of first serves in play and won 71% of first serve points (30/42). Mboko won 64% of second serve points (16/25) and saved four of five break points in the match. She broke Birrell three times to round off a 47th win of an impressive breakout season. Mboko has now compiled 13 wins from 15 matches on outdoor hard courts. She has won five ITF titles and is currently sitting at a career-high ranking of No. 85.

Sofia Kenin enters the 2025 Canadian Open as the 23rd seed. The former US Open champion is ranked 27th in the WTA rankings, and competition for a seeding spot at the US Open later this month will hot up. Kenin can ill afford another early exit. She was comprehensively beaten by Taylor Townsend in Washington, tallying only three games in a straight-sets blowout. 

Overall, Kenin has a 25-17 record this year, winning half of those matches on hard courts. Her best result of the season was reaching the final in Charleston on green clay, and she lost to Jessica Pegula. This will be her fourth main draw appearance in Canada. She was a semifinalist in 2019, but lost in the first round last year when the tournament was held in Toronto.
