Victoria Azarenka is unseeded and recently fell out of the top 50. Azarenka will play in Rome for the 16th main draw and is one of the oldest and most decorated players in the women’s draw. Her best result was reaching the finals back in 2013 and losing to Serena Williams in straight sets. In her subsequent trips to the Italian capital, Azarenka has made the quarterfinals at least four times, including last year when she lost to Danielle Collins. 

Azarenka, a two-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1, has most certainly entered a decline phase in her career, but even at 35, she’s done commendably to stay firmly in the Top 100. Azarenka is having a poor season with just four wins from 11 matches and has lost in the opening round three times already this year with her most recent defeat coming at the Madrid Open against Olga Danilovic. Azarenka has not lost in the first round in Rome since 2018. In fact that’s only one of two opening round defeats she’s suffered in this tournament since 2006.

Camila Osorio Preview

Camila Osorio is Colombia’s top-ranked WTA player, ranked 55th in the current rankings. Like Azarenka, she is unseeded in Rome and will make her fourth main draw appearance. Osorio has reached the round of 16 once, and was knocked out in the second round stage twice in her career. She’s not lost an opening round at the Italian Open.

Osorio is having a better season than Azarenka. She won her third career title on clay in Bogota in early April and was on a six-match winning streak after that but lost to Elise Mertens in the second round at the Madrid Open. Osorio has one defeat in her last seven matches and is 11-6 for the season, with her only first-round defeat this year coming against Victoria Mboko in Miami.

Azarenka has a fine record in Rome. She’s probably one of the best players not to have lifted a trophy in this tournament, having played for 15 years. But her form and physique are waning, and she’s yet to find her rhythm after her recent injury in Miami. Osorio has enjoyed an excellent spell on clay this year, winning a title in her home country and looking to settle on the European clay. This has three sets written all over it, but right now Osorio is the more reliable pick to edge this.
