Panna Udvardy made her long-awaited Top 100 return this week. The Hungarian climbed to No. 95 in the WTA rankings at a time when lower-ranked players are determined to chase points and prize money at 125K and ITF tournaments.

Udvardy was among those players making a traditional pitstop in South America this close season. The 27-year-old won her second title of the season at the Buenos Aires 125K last weekend, and she did so without dropping a title.

Udvardy atones for her runner-up finish in Cali, where she was overpowered by Sinja Kraus and improves to 54-31 for the season. On clay, she is 35-23 at all levels and her other title was also on the dirt at the Blois ITF.

Diletta Cherubini is ranked outside the Top 300. The Italian has never been ranked higher than 365th. She is 23 and is a right-hander. Cherubini has played just once on the WTA Tour level and that was in her home tournament in Rome, where she was handed a main draw wild card two seasons ago.

Cherubini plays most of her tennis, if not all, at the ITF level, where in 211 matches in her career, she has posted a 100-111 record. This season alone, she has won 15 matches and lost 19, translating to a win rate of 44.1%. She’s had to qualify for the main draw in Quito, beating Ecuadorian teenager Monica Gallegos in straight sets. It’s her third win on clay since the start of October.

Udvardy starts as the strong favorite and enters this tournament on the back of a perfect week in Buenos Aires. Granted she’s only had one day of rest after trekking to Quito at the weekend, the Hungarian should still progress into the second round and extend her win streak. She’s in better form and is the more polished player on clay. But if Udvardy’s legs feel the travel, the total games spread could be worth a nibble and Cherubini is steady enough to get a few games on the board.
