Petra Kvitova and Katie Volynets meet in the first round of the 2025 WTA Madrid Open on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Here’s our Petra Kvitova vs Katie Volynets prediction. This preview will also include a Petra Kvitova vs Katie Volynets pick.
Petra Kvitova Preview
Petra Kvitova’s comeback season has not gone to plan so far, with the Czech lefty losing in all three matches she has played this year. Kvitova began her campaign in the United States, where she played her first tournament post-maternity in Austin, Texas. She lost in the first round to Jodie Burrage in three sets.
Kvitova then took part in the spring hard-court season at the Sunshine Swing, but didn’t have any success either, losing to Varvara Gracheva in Indian Wells and Sofia Kenin in Miami. After that, Kvitova did not play in any events and will kick off her European clay swing in Madrid. Historically, this has been a happy hunting ground for Kvitova, having triumphed three times in the past and reached the quarterfinals or better three times.
Katie Volynets Preview
Katie Volynets will compete in her second Madrid Open main draw. She lost to Linda Fruhvirtova in straight sets on her debut back in 2023. Last year, she failed to navigate the qualifying rounds. Volynets is ranked 70th in the WTA rankings.
Volynets has compiled a 12-10 record in 2025. Her best results at the WTA level came on hard courts. She made the quarterfinal in Auckland and reached the last 16 in Abu Dhabi as a qualifier. Volynets has played in two clay-court tournaments this month. She was knocked out in the second round in Charleston and is coming off a runner-up finish at the W100 ITF tournament in Oeiras (lost to Dalma Galfi).

Petra Kvitova vs Katie Volynets Prediction
Kvitova has a great track record in Madrid, having won this WTA 1000 event three times in her illustrious career. It’s her most successful clay-court tournament. But she’s still searching for a winning formula in her comeback after childbirth. She’s won a couple of sets in three matches. Although she has looked competitive, Kvitova’s swing of her left arm is not as devastating and effective as it once was. That can all change, having had more time in practice to recalibrate that power game. Look, if Kvitova finds the corners and dictates the match, Volynets is unlikely to stop her. The American lacks the tools to keep the Czech at bay at altitude and will need Kvitova to operate below that 70% mark to seriously contend here. I’m rolling the dice and backing the two-time Wimbledon champ to clinch victory.
