Andrey Rublev has won won two matches to reach the third round of the Paris Masters for the first time since 2023. The big-hitting Russian started the tournament with a composed and clinical 6-1, 6-4 win over Great Britain’s Jacob Fearnley in a match where Fearnley hammered a whopping 11 double faults to give Rublev an easy victory.

Rublev’s second-round win was also straightforward as he powered past American Next Gen star Learner Tien in straight sets. The match took 20 games to decide. Rublev won 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 20 minutes. Rublev hit 12 winners and 13 unforced errors in the match, and that included seven aces and seven double faults.  

Rublev landed 59% of first serves in play and won 87% of first serve points (34/39). Rublev won 37% of second serve points (10/27) and saved eight of nine break points. He had lost five matches in a row before this week, but has turned the tide in some style and will look to make the quarterfinals for only the second time.

Ben Shelton is a top five seed at the Paris Masters and received a bye in the first round. Shelton opened his account this week with an impressive straight sets win against Italy’s rising star Flavio Cobolli. The match took 22 games to decide, lasting an hour and 34 minutes. Shelton had applied the pressure on return throughout the first set and that paid dividends in the tiebreak where only mini break was the difference.

The American lefty broke serve for the first time in the match in the sixth game of the second set and Shelton held in each of his next two service games to seal a 7-6, 6-3 win. Shelton hit 3 aces and 3 double faults in the victory. He landed 67% of first serves in play and won 86% of first serve points (37/43). Shelton won 71% of second serve points (15/21) and saved one break point in the match.

I’m leaning toward Rublev in what is a very tight match that could go either way. We now know for sure Rublev won’t qualify for the ATP Finals after a run of five straight defeats ended his interest. But he’s playing with more conviction and under minimal pressure. That’s when Rublev is more composed and dangerous. While it’s a little too late for him to retain any hope of finishing the season in the top 10, he can still carry that confidence and momentum into next season by going far in Paris.
