Fernandez won 59% of second serve points (10/17) and saved one break point in the match. This is her first quarterfinal since Washington, where she won the tournament.

Rebecca Sramkova, for her part, beat the tenacious Ann Li in three sets to reach the Osaka quarterfinals. Sramkova won the opening set 6-2 in 33 minutes, hitting 3 aces and winning 63% of first serve points (15/24).

Sramkova’s second serve points won dwindled significantly in the second set, where she was broken for the first time in the fourth game and ended up giving away the set. But the hard-hitting Slovak found her mojo in the decider and broke Li in the crucial sixth game. She needed three match points in the end to wrap up victory.
