Mirra Andreeva vs Elina Svitolina Preview
Mirra Andreeva beat a determined Elena Gabriela Ruse to make the Australian Open fourth round for the third consecutive season. Andreeva won a tight opening set with the only break in the sixth game. There were breaks galore in the second set, but once Andreeva led 4-3 with a break, she did not relinquish that advantage and won two more games to complete the victory in the night session inside Rod Laver Arena. The World No. 7 hammered 11 winners and 24 unforced errors in the match. She landed 64% of first serves in play and won 66% of first serve points (27/41). Andreeva won 61% of second serve points (14/23) and saved six of eight break points on her serve. Andreeva had accounted for wins over Donna Vekic and Maria Sakkari before this. She has not gone beyond the fourth round in this tournament in the last two years, so she will be seeking her first quarterfinal appearance.
Standing in her way will be Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina. The World No. 12 beat Andreeva’s doubles partner, Diana Shnaider, in the last round. Svitolina edged a first-set tiebreak 7-4 after 51 minutes and earned one more break than Shnaider in the second set to close out a 7-6, 6-3 win.
Svitolina hit 23 winners and 30 unforced errors in the match. That included 5 aces and 5 double faults. Svitolina landed 56% of first serves in play and won 70% of first serve points (30/43). Svitolina won 47% of second serve points (16/34) and saved one of five break points she faced.
Svitolina has not lost a set in this year’s Australian Open, having beaten Cristina Bucsa and Linda Klimovicova in straight sets. The 31-year-old has played in three Australian Open quarterfinals, with the most recent one coming last year, where she lost to eventual champion Madison Keys.
