Maya Joint and Leylah Fernandez meet in the first round of the 2025 Washington Open. The match is scheduled for Monday, July 21. Here’s our Maya Joint vs Leylah Fernandez prediction. This preview will also include a Maya Joint vs Leylah Fernandez pick.
Maya Joint vs Leylah Fernandez Preview
Maya Joint is ranked a career-high No. 37. The 19-year-old Australian is enjoying a breakout year on the main tour, and it all began on home soil when she reached the semifinals of Hobart. Joint has gone on to rack up 38 wins this season to 17 defeats. She won her first WTA tournament in Rabat, Morocco, without losing a set. While the French Open came quickly enough (lost in the first round), just as the youngster was in celebratory mood following that title win, she bounced back during the grass swing, reaching her second WTA final and taking home the title against all the odds. Joint saved four match points to stun Alexandra Eala and won Eastbourne.
The Aussie was handed a tough draw at Wimbledon against big-hitting Liudmila Samsonova, and it wasn’t a productive stay in London as she lost in straight sets. Now her attention will turn to the North America hard court swing with Joint earning a main draw entry in a stacked Washington draw based on her ranking. This will be her debut appearance at the event. She has a 19-9 record on hard courts this season, with her best result coming at the WTA 500 in Merida in late February.
Leylah Fernandez is the World No. 35. She is a former Top 15 player and US Open finalist. Fernandez is making her second appearance in Washington D.C. The Canadian qualified for the tournament in 2023 before losing to Maria Sakkari in the last 16. Fernandez has a modest 16-17 record this season, although she has won 10 matches on hard courts. Her best result on the surface so far was in Abu Dhabi where she made the quarterfinals. Her last match win on a hard court was in March at the Miami Open (defeated Alycia Parks). Ferndez has won two of her last five matches, and is coming off a straight-sets defeat to Laura Siegemund at Wimbledon.
Maya Joint vs Leylah Fernandez Head-To-Head
Joint and Fernandez have not played at any level. This first-round match at the Citi Open will be their first meeting.
Maya Joint vs Leylah Fernandez Prediction
Joint starts as the slight favorite despite her limited experience at the Tour level. That aside, the young Aussie showed why she belongs here, with two titles under her belt already this season and a handful of big wins against Top 50 players. She’s had a phenomenal rise. But I’m putting the brakes a bit. Fernandez has underdog value and has always played her best tennis when counted out. The Canadian is one of the best movers on tour and a great absorber of pace. She is a player who digs in and refuses to go away and which can immediately spark frustration across the net. Fernandez is the complete package and competitor and you are getting that plus money to win this match.
