Jenson Brooksby vs Yoshihito Nishioka Preview
Jenson Brooksby is celebrating his return to the Top 100 this week. The American was ranked a lowly 1098th in February, having been out of action from the tour due to surgery and suspension for two years. Brooksby enjoyed his first proper run of form in Indian Wells, winning back-to-back matches. It didn’t take long before he was on the winner’s podium. Brooksby came through qualifying at the ATP 250 in Houston, saving match points in three matches and winning the tournament. His ranking skyrocketed into the Top 200. He failed to replicate that success in other clay-court tournaments in Europe, winning just one main draw match at the French Open.
But grass brought the best out of Brooksby. He reached the Eastbourne final as a lucky loser, earning victories over Ugo Humbert and Dan Evans, and falling short to compatriot Taylor Fritz. As of this week, Brooksby is now ranked 99th, his best ranking after his comeback, and will now be pushing for a strong finish to the season as the North American hard-court swing commences. Brooksby is competing in Washington for a third time. He was a semifinalist on his debut back in 2021, but remarkably, lost in the opening round the following season to Yoshihito Nishioka, whom he will face again to kick off the tournament in 2025.
Yoshihito Nishioka is having a poor season. He has played in 13 tournaments, but retired in six of them. He has a 6-9 record in ATP tournaments, which is his worst return since 2021, when he won 10 from 33 matches. The Japanese lefty’s fitness record has let him down, although his talent and shotmaking ability have enabled him to win some matches and retain a Top 100 ranking. But his problems persist, Nishioka is facing a Top 100 exit with a huge chunk of points to defend in the summer hard-court swing in America. He’ll start off in Washington, where he is making his seventh appearance at the event.
Nishioka was a finalist in this tournament three summers ago when he stunned the formidable trio of Alex de Minaur, Karen Khachanov, and Andrey Rublev to make the final. There, he lost to Nick Kyrgios in straight sets. Nishioka’s last ATP win was in February when he defeated Aleksandar Vukic in the first round of the Delray Beach Open, only to withdraw from the tournament shortly after.
Jenson Brooksby vs Yoshihito Nishioka Head-To-Head
Brooksby and Nishioka have played twice. The Japanese man leads the head-to-head 2-0. Nishioka beat Brooksby 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal of the 2022 Columbus Challenger and lost the same number of games when they met in Washington that same season.
Jenson Brooksby vs Yoshihito Nishioka Prediction
Nishioka leads the series with two wins over Brooksby, including in this very tournament three seasons ago. But Brooksby is having a resurgent year. He’s an ATP champion and is back in the Top 100. This is also his favorite phase of the calendar, and he is playing an out-of-form Nishioka who is winless since February.
