World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will face World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz for the title in the Cincinnati Open final. The match is scheduled for Monday, August 18. Here’s our Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz prediction. This preview will also include a Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz pick.
Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz Preview
Jannik Sinner finally ended the fairytale run of French qualifier Terence Atmane to reach his second career final at the Cincinnati Open. Atmane didn’t go down easily after knocking out two top 10 opponents during the fortnight, and matched Jannik Sinner for pretty much the whole first set which neither player lost serve. Sinner, however, upped the ante to win the tiebreak 7-4 after 47 minutes.
After surviving four deuces in the opening game of the first set, Sinner went on to break Atmane for the first time in the match and take a 3-1 lead. He would break him for a second time to clinch the match 7-6, 6-2 in an hour and 27 minutes. Sinner finished the match with 21 winners and 16 unforced errors. He hit six aces and did not account for any double faults. Sinner landed 58% of first serves in play and won 91% of first serve points (32/35). He won 68% of second serve points (17/25) and did not face a break point. Sinner will contest his second final after winning this tournament last season. Sinner has not lost a hard-court match in almost a year.
Carlos Alcaraz, meanwhile, beat Alexander Zverev in the other semifinal to make the Cincinnati final. Alcaraz settled the match in straight sets in an hour and 45 minutes. He broke Zverev’s serve once in the first set and wrapped it up 6-4. At the start of the second set, both players exchanged breaks, but Alcaraz broke the German twice towards the end to win 6-4, 6-3.
Alcaraz lost his only previous final in Cincinnati against Novak Djokovic. He had match point, but lost in heartbreaking fashion in nearly four hours in what remains the tournament’s longest final and the longest best-of-three ATP final in history. Alcaraz has already beaten Sinner once at Masters level this season, in Rome, in straight sets.
Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz Head-To-Head
Sinner and Alcaraz have met 13 times at Tour level. Alcaraz leads 8-5 and is the last man to beat Sinner on a hard court in Beijing last season.
Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz Prediction
I’m giving Sinner the edge here, but I could see this covering the total games in the overs, with potentially three sets on offer. Sinner finally ended his long drought for a win over Alcaraz at this year’s Wimbledon after going 0-5 against him in the last five meetings and appearing to run out of ideas on how to solve the puzzle. Now, he’s overcome that mental barrier and should the favorite to win this match.
