Iva Jovic vs Emiliana Arango Preview

Iva Jovic reached her first WTA final at this week’s Guadalajara Open. The 17-year-old outlasted fellow teenager Nikola Bartunkova in three sets. The match took 31 games and lasted two hours and 51 minutes. Jovic prevailed 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

Jovic hit two aces and four double faults in the victory over the Czech. She landed 81% of first serves in play and won 63% of first serve points (60/96). Jovic won 50% of second serve points (11/22) and saved six of nine break points.

Before this win, Jovic had accounted for a single straight sets win during the week, and that was in beating Camila Osorio of Colombia. She lost sets in matches against Katerzyna Kawa and Jimenez Kasintseva. Jovic’s biggest career title to date was the Ilkey 125K she won on grass earlier this season.

Facing Jovic in the final will be Colombia’s Emiliana Arango. She is ranked 86th in the world rankings. Arango will contest her second WTA 500 of her career and third of this year after also reaching the finals in Cancun and Merida earlier this season. She won the 125K title in Cancun but was comprehensively beaten by Emma Navarro in Merida. This, remarkably, is her third final on Mexican soil.

Arango beat Elsa Jacquemot, who had conquered some big names before the semifinals. Arango prevailed 6-4, 7-5 in just under two hours. She didn’t account for any aces but hit three double faults. Arango landed 80% of first serves in play and won 63% of first serve points (38/60). The 24-year-old won 47% of the second serve points (7/15) and saved eight of 11 break points.

Jovic and Arango have never played before this.

Iva Jovic vs Emiliana Arango Prediction

I’m leaning toward Jovic in this one. You always see up-and-coming teenagers on tour try to be flashy and willing to overpress in high-pressure situations. But not Jovic, who is showing poise and maturity at only 17. She does almost all the basics right, although I would still like to see a bit more consistency in winning second serve points. She’s been broken quite a few times after taking a lead this week, but that doesn’t usually disrupt her rhythm. She is calculated and very aggressive on the return. Give me Jovic to close this in straight sets.

Nur Said's Pick: Iva Jovic in straight sets
