Ann Li reached her third final of the season at WTA level in Guangzhou. The American did not drop a set all week. In the first round, Li beat Jimenez Kasintseva 6-4, 7-6 in an hour and 54 minutes. Li defeated Camila Osorio 7-5, 6-2 in the second round in just 78 minutes. The second seed then overcame Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Li played for just 26 minutes to progress to her third final this year after opponent Zhang Shuai retired after only seven games in their semifinal match. Li is a one-time champion on the WTA Tour. She won that title in Tenerife in 2021. She has lost twice in championship matches this season, in Singapore to Elise Mertens and Cleveland to Sorana Cirstea.

Lulu Sun reached her second WTA final of her career at the Guangzhou Open. Sun is coming off a straight-sets win over Claire Liu in an all-qualifier battle. Sun thumped Liu 6-0 in the opening set after 34 minutes on the clock. And the New Zealand lefty confirmed victory when she won the second set in a tiebreak.

Sun hit 4 aces and 1 double fault. Sun landed 51% of first serves in play and won 75% of first serve points (21/28). She won 67% of second serve points (18/27) and saved one of two break points in the match. Sun’s only previous final appearance was in August 2024, when she lost to Linda Noskova in Monterrey.

I’ll back the underdog here and that is Lulu Sun, who has been in an incredible run since late September. Those lost points in Monterrey affected her top 100 stay, but she picked herself up and won almost every match at the 125K level in the last few weeks. Li starts as the favorite and is probably just a bit more accustomed to playing Tour-level finals, but Sun has nothing to lose and will surely relish the opportunity to bag her first WTA title.
