Elina Svitolina and Moyuka Uchijima meet in the quarterfinals of the 2025 WTA Madrid Open on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. Here’s our Elina Svitolina vs Moyuka Uchijima prediction. This preview will also include an Elina Svitolina vs Moyuka Uchijima pick.
Elina Svitolina Preview
Elina Svitolina notched her 10th win in a row after besting Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the round of 16 at the Madrid Open. Svitolina, the 17th seed, is one of two Ukrainians still in the draw and has now delivered her best achievement in this tournament.
Svitolina needed an hour and 38 minutes to complete a 6-3, 6-4 victory against the resurgent Sakkari. She couldn’t have asked for a better start to the match, getting a break in the first game. She consolidated her service games and then broke Sakkari’s serve for a second time in the ninth game to seal the opening set 6-3.
In the second set, Svitolina lost her serve twice, but also broke Sakkari three times. Crucially, her third break in the second set helped seal the straight sets. Svitolina had beaten Sonay Kartal in her opening match, then upset former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. Svitolina’s 10-match winning streak includes two singles wins in the BJK Cup qualifying. She is seeking her second WTA title of the season after clinching the WTA 250 in Rouen.
Moyuka Uchijima Preview
Moyuka Uchijima is the unexpected first-time quarterfinalist at this level after another shocking result. Uchijima knocked out 21st seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 7-6 in the same time Svitolina took to beat Sakkari. She made a lightning-fast start to take a 4-1 lead with three breaks of serve.
But despite some difficulty in closing out the set, Uchijima succeeded. The second set had the same outcome as Alexandrova dropped her serve twice. The Russian recovered the deficit and saved two breakpoints to hold for 6-5. She eventually forced a tie-break, but Uchijima held her nerve to win it.
The Japanese World No. 56 is having a memorable week. She earned a Top 5 win against Jessica Pegula in the third round and had beaten former Madrid champion Ons Jabeur a round earlier. Now, she will be looking to break new ground and reach her first semifinal on clay at the WTA level. Uchijima has won eight of her last nine matches.
Elina Svitolina vs Moyuka Uchijima Head-To-Head
Svitolina and Uchijima have met once before this. Svitolina won that meeting in the first round of the 2024 Paris Olympics in straight sets.
Elina Svitolina vs Moyuka Uchijima Prediction
Svitolina and Uchijima have done a lot of winning in the last three weeks. But the major surprise is how Uchijima, who had no track record on this surface at the Tour level, managed to outsmart some of the biggest names in women’s tennis in this tournament. I’m not entirely writing her off in this one, but Svitolina is turning the lights off (no pun intended) on everybody standing in her way at this year’s clay swing and should be expected to charge into her first Madrid semifinal.
