Danielle Collins is unseeded at the Strasbourg Open. She started her campaign in the first round, beating Sofia Kenin in an all-American clash. Collins won 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. In the second round, Collins had to put in a little more effort to overcome Emma Raducanu 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the last eight.

In the quarters, Collins received a walkover after her opponent, Anna Kalinskaya, withdrew from the tournament because of an injury she sustained in her big win over Jessica Pegula. Collins, therefore, will have a shot at reaching a second successive final in Strasbourg. She lost last year’s showpiece to Madison Keys. Collins has compiled a 6-2 record on clay from playing in three tournaments. Before this week, she reached the quarterfinals in Charleston and the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 in Rome. Her highlight was beating four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek in the Italian capital.

Liudmila Samsonova Preview

Liudmila Samsonova is the eighth seed in Strasbourg, making her sixth main draw appearance at the event. Samsonova started the week with an excellent 6-1, 7-5 win over Linda Noskova. In the second round, Samsonova beat home favorite Diane Parry 6-4, 6-4.

The Russian withstood her biggest challenger so far in the quarterfinals. She knocked out the third seed, Paula Badosa, in three sets.  Samsonova won the first set 6-4, having recovered from a 0-2 deficit. Badosa responded to take the second set 6-3 with just one break of serve. In the decider, Samsonova had the insurance of a double break to lead 4-0. Despite fumbling at two match points when serving for the match, Samsonova broke Badosa in the 10th game for the victory. Samsonova is now 4-3 on clay this season, having won once in three tournaments before this week. She lost her previous WTA semifinal on clay in Strasbourg 12 months ago to Madison Keys.

Samsonova brings pace but lacks the poise on this surface, and that was evident in her difficulties closing out Paula Badosa in the quarters. Collins has been striking clean off both wings this swing, and you have to consider that she’s only played three tournaments and hasn’t been beaten easily. She’ll also enter this match with fresher legs after being given a walkover in the quarterfinals. Value lies with the player who will demonstrate controlled aggression, which is not something you would associate with these two big hitters. But if Collins redlines the ball and the occasion, then I can’t see Samsonova stopping her.
