Coco Gauff Preview
Coco Gauff is coming off an impressive straight-sets win over Belinda Bencic. The match took 18 games to decide. Gauff prevailed 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 24 minutes. Gauff compiled 32 winners and 24 unforced errors, including two aces and one double fault. She landed 57% of first serves in play and won 85% of first serve points (22/26). Gauff won 65% of second serve points (13/20) and only faced one breakpoint in the match.
Gauff had beaten Ann Li and Dayana Yastremska in her opening two matches. This is her first quarterfinal at the Madrid Open. She had lost in the round of 16 stage twice. Gauff improves to 17-6 for the season and is 4-1 on clay. Her only defeat on the surface was to Jasmine Paolini in Stuttgart. The American is still looking to win her first title at the WTA level this season and hasn’t reached a semifinal or final outside the United Cup.
Mirra Andreeva Preview
Mirra Andreeva continued her great run at WTA 1000 events as she powered into her second Madrid Open quarterfinal. Andreeva defeated Ukrainian qualifier Yulia Starodubtseva 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 35 minutes. In the victory, Andreeva hit 12 winners and 36 unforced errors. She accounted for four double faults in the match. Andreeva landed 67% of first serves in play and won 63% of first serve points (32/51).
The seventh seed won 68% of second serve points (17/25) and saved all nine breakpoints she faced on serve. Andreeva improves to 24-5 for the season and is now 4-1 on clay after losing to Alexandrova in the last 16 in Stuttgart. Andreeva has reached the finals in two of four WTA 1000s this season and lifted the Indian Wells title.
Coco Gauff vs Mirra Andreeva Head-To-Head
Gauff and Andreeva have met twice at the WTA level. Gauff leads the head-to-head 2-0 and defeated Andreeva on clay at the 2023 French Open in three sets.
Coco Gauff vs Mirra Andreeva Prediction
This should be a classic. Gauff has cemented her status as an elite player, and Andreeva is now just joining that cadre after a sensational start to the 2025 season. But I’m leaning toward Gauff in this one, not purely due to that head-to-head record or experience advantage. Gauff is a rock-solid defender, and she matches up well with the Russian’s weight of shot. She can cover the court with a few steps and reach near-certain winners and return with depth. Moreover, Gauff has a more complete game than Andreeva at this stage of their careers and will pounce on the teenager’s weaker serve. I still expect Andreeva to challenge, potentially even taking a set, but fall just short in the end.
