Coco Gauff is the top seed at the Canadian Open in Montreal. The World No.2  will lead the draw in this WTA 1000 tournament following Aryna Sabalenka’s withdrawal. Gauff is making her fifth main draw appearance in Canada. She has played in Montreal twice and reached the quarterfinals in 2021 and 2023. Last year, she lost in the last 16 to Diana Shnaider in Toronto.

Gauff is returning to North America after a mixed season in Europe. She reached three clay-court finals and won her first French Open singles title with a victory over World No.1  Sabalenka in the final. But she was ousted in the opening round of Wimbledon by Dayana Yastremska. Gauff was clearly disappointed by that result in a shocking grass swing (0-2), but the positives to take include winning a second Grand Slam of her career, and with a real shot at the No. 1 ranking.

Danielle Collins is unseeded and is making her fourth career appearance in this tournament. Her best result was a quarterfinal finish in 2023 when she stormed from qualifying. Collins didn’t participate in the Canadian Open at this time last season. 

The 31-year-old won her opening match this week against Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets. The match took 21 games to decide and lasted an hour and 31 minutes. Collins settled the opening set with just one break of serve. The second set was a little more competitive, with both players trading breaks before Collins secured the decisive break in the 11th game. Collins hit three aces and three double faults in the match. She won 67% of first serve points (30/45) and saved 10 of 11 break points.

This is the first meeting between Gauff and Collins, and it’s strange that they’ve never met before. Gauff is coming off that Wimbledon shocker where she was knocked out in the opening round. She will be keen to bounce back in a tournament that she has not lost before the quarterfinal in Montreal. Collins cannot be counted out from delivering fireworks, having secured one match under her belt this week, but her high-risk match rhythm is rarely sustainable against the sport’s best defenders, and Gauff is one of those.
