Casper Ruud reached his third Masters 1000 final of his career after a gusty 6-4, 7-5 win over 20th seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina. Despite getting treatment for what appeared to be a rib injury, Ruud saved an incredible 15 of 18 breakpoints, including one massive hold from 0-40 down at 5-5 in the second set before prevailing in straight sets.

Ruud has not dropped a set during the fortnight in Madrid, having beaten Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 6-4 in his opening match. Then he took out Sebastian Korda 6-3, 6-3. He overcame his two toughest opponents in the round of 16 and quarterfinals, beating Taylor Fritz 7-5, 6-4 and Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-5.

Ruud has won 12 ATP titles, but none of those at the Masters 1000 level. This will be his second final of the season. He lost to Denis Shapovalov in Dallas. He is projected to return to the Top 10 next week.

Jack Draper Preview

While Ruud’s presence in the final is not a great surprise considering his pedigree on clay, Jack Draper’s spot in the final has shocked many. The British left-hander knocked out Lorenzo Musetti to reach his first career final on clay. It’s Draper’s second Masters 1000 final of the season, coming hot on the heels of his title win at Indian Wells in March.

His quarterfinal win over Arnaldi also meant that he will enter the top 5 on Monday for the first time. Draper has posted a solid 19-4 record for the season and is 6-1 on clay. Draper has lifted three ATP titles, but none of those were on clay. He will join his idol Andy Murray on the roll of honor list in Madrid if he triumphs on Sunday.

So Sunday’s final is just as important for him to put his name in the thick of the action as a major contender for the French Open. However, I can’t look past a Draper win. Ruud’s forehand has been devastating this tournament, but he’s still giving away too many openings, especially on his serve, and a confident and in-form player like Draper will eventually capitalize. The conditions in Madrid will also favor the big-hitting Briton, whose aggressive game will be rewarded with plenty of winners. Give me Draper in two sets.
