Aryna Sabalenka will play Jessica Pegula in the final of the 2024 Cincinnati Open. The match is scheduled for Monday, August 19, 2024. Here’s our Aryna Sabalenka vs Jessica Pegula prediction. This article will also provide Aryna Sabalenka vs Jessica Pegula pick.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Jessica Pegula Preview
Aryna Sabalenka earned her fourth win over World No.1 Iga Swiatek to reach her first Cincinnati Open final. The Belarusian, who is guaranteed to return to World No. 2 in the rankings this week, was at her scintillating best as she downed the Pole in two routine sets on Sunday in a match that took 18 games to decide. The margin of victory could have been far greater had Sabalenka taken her first match point at 6-3, 5-1 up.
But credit to Swiatek for hanging on, winning two more games and delaying the inevitable. It took the third seed TEN match points to cross the finish line. Sabalenka will have the chance to play for her second title of the season. She won the Australian Open in January—her lone title of 2024 so far.
Jessica Pegula, meanwhile, remains undefeated at this year’s North American hard-court swing. Having defended her title at the Canadian Open in Toronto a week ago, Pegula has overcome fatigue fears to reach the Cincinnati Open final for the first time.
The American picked up her ninth straight hard-court win by beating Paula Badosa in a topsy-turvy semifinal that was paused multiple times because of rain. Eventually, Pegula won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in almost two hours. She converted five of 11 break points. Badosa, by contrast, only broke serve three times.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Jessica Pegula Head-To-Head
• Sabalenka leads Pegula 4-2 in their head-to-head.
• On hard courts, it is the American who holds a narrow advantage 2-1.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Jessica Pegula Prediction
Sabalenka has not dropped a set at this year’s Cincinnati Open, and Sunday’s demolition job of World No. 1 Swiatek suggests she wants this title so badly. There’s been a string of near-misses by the soon-to-be World No. 2, who lost the finals in Brisbane, Madrid, and Rome and is holding onto the Australian Open (which is her only title of 2024).
The Belarusian has played the better tennis this week underpinned by her composure and ability to overcome lapses in concentration. It would take another monumental effort from Pegula, who could be running out of gas, to extend her excellent winning streak.
