Aryna Sabalenka vs Elise Mertens Preview
Aryna Sabalenka is coming off a tight straight sets win over home favorite Emma Raducanu. In a battle between two major champions, Sabalenka and Raducanu pushed each other to the limit in front of a packed house during the last match of the day on Centre Court. The first set lasted well over an hour, and it was Sabalenka who blinked first to gift a break to Raducanu at 2-2. Raducanu was broken back and after Sabalenka spurned seven set points at 5-4, she lost her serve in the next game. Raducanu, cheered by an expectant British crowd, could not serve out for the set at 6-5. Sabalenka broke back again and saved a set point before prevailing 8-6 in the tiebreak.
In the second set, Raducanu briefly led 4-1 with a break of serve, but could not keep up with the barrage of big hitting from Sabalenka, who recovered that deficit to five games in a row. Sabalenka finished the match with 31 winners and 32 unforced errors, of which she accounted for four aces and one double fault. Sabalenka had beaten Carson Branstine and Marie Bouzkova in the first two rounds. She has not dropped a set in the tournament. Sabalenka improves to 5-1 on grass and will look to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinal for the third time.
Elise Mertens, meanwhile, continued her excellent run on grass after beating two-time Wimbledon semifinalist Elina Svitolina in the last round. Mertens won the first set 6-1 in 27 minutes. The second set was much more competitive, with each player break the other once before a tiebreak decided matters. Svitolina had the best star,t winning the first three points and then leading 4-2 at the change of ends. But Mertens won five consecutive points to steal the set and seal victory.
Mertens hit 21 winners and 26 unforced errors in the victory. She fired four aces and one double fault. Mertens landed 59% of first serves in play and won 68% of first serve points (28/41). Mertens won 59% of second serve points (17/29) and saved five of six break points. The Belgian improves to 8-1 on grass. She won her first grass-court title at the Libema Open last month and her only defeat this swing was to Svitolina in Bad Homburg. Having exercised revenge, Mertens can aim for an even bigger shock when she faces top seed Aryna Sabalenka.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Elise Mertens Head-To-Head
Sabalenka and Mertens have met 12 times at all levels. The Belarusian holds a 10-2 lead in the series. Their only grass-court meeting was at 2018 Eastbourne. Sabalenka won in three sets.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Elise Mertens Prediction
Mertens is in exceptional form winning eight of her last nine including a title at the WTA 250 event in Den Bosch, saving a record 11 match points in the semis. Sabalenka has not dropped a set in the tournament, but she hasn’t been steamroling as expected, with Bouzkova and Raducanu each getting a crack at serving for the set against her. Mertens is relentless and has admirable work ethic. She’ll make Sabalenka earn every point, but the Belgian’s defense will exposed by the sheer power of Sabalenka’s serve+1.
