Anna Blinkova won a battle of qualifiers to reach the second round of the Madrid Open. The Russian beat Hungary’s Panna Udvardy 6-4, 6-2 in 80 minutes to progress. In the victory, Blinkova hit 14 winners and 30 unforced errors. She accounted for two aces in the match. Blinkova landed 62% of first serves in play and won 67% of first serve points (24/36). She won 55% of second serve points (12/22) and saved six of eight breakpoints.

Blinkova garnered 53% of return points (31/58) and broke Udvardy five times. Blinkova had previously lost in the first round in each of her two previous Madrid main draws. She improves to 13-10 for the season and is now 3-2 on clay.

Blinkova is a stoic competitor, but I just don’t see how she can handle Sabalenka’s heavier shots, which will pierce through her defenses at the speed of light.
