Alycia Parks is the World No. 60 and is entering her third main draw at the China Open. Parks made her Beijing debut in 2023 and lost in the first round to Liudmila Samsonova. Last year, Parks qualified for the main draw and lost in the second round stage to Magdalena Frech. 

Parks kicked off her Asian swing in Seoul where she surprisingly lost to France’s Chloe Paquet in the first round in straight sets. The defeat was her fourth in succession and her 24th this season. She has won just 17 matches all year. Her best results include two semifinal finsihes in Auckland and Monterrey which have cemented her spot in the Top 70.

Sonay Kartal was ranked in the Top 50 just last month, but she’s lost plenty of points for not defending her title in Monastir, and her ranking fell to 81st. Kartal is competing in Beijing for the first time. She has compiled a 20-19 record in 2025. Last year, Kartal won 53 matches and lost only nine times, although most of her appearances were on the ITF as she slowly built her ranking and confidence.

Kartal was part of the Great Britain squad that reached the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup this past weekend. She won her singles match against Japan’s Ena Shibahara but lost to Emma Navarro in Great Britain’s defeat to the USA. Overall, Kartal has won once in her last six matches coming to the China Open.

Parks has been unreliable of late, but the American is one of those players who can flip the switch at any time on a hard court thanks to her massive serve and forehand power. That said, Kartal played so well at the Billie Jean King Cup last week, and I don’t think she was struggling with confidence during that four-match winless run. She’s not had a straight-sets defeat since Wimbledon, so I’m leaning toward the overs here.
