Top seed Alexander Zverev will face 11th seed Karen Khachanov in the first semifinal of the 2025 Toronto Masters. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, August 6. Here’s our Alexander Zverev vs Karen Khachanov prediction. This preview will also include an Alexander Zverev vs Karen Khachanov pick.
Alexander Zverev vs Karen Khachanov Preview
Alexander Zverev overcame defending champion Alexei Popyrin in a gripping quarterfinal to reach his 75th ATP semifinal of his career. Zverev produced one of his best comebacks of the season to down the Aussie and reach the last four in Canada for the first time since 2017, the year he went on to win the tournament when it was staged in Montreal, beating Roger Federer in the final.
Zverev lost a thrilling first-set tiebreak after an hour and 12 minutes, squandering two set points and losing it 10-8. But he was the first player to break serve in the match, doing so in the second game of the second set and consolidating that lead until 4-2 up when he Popyrin restored parity. But while serving to stay in the set, Popyrin’s serve malfunctioned for a second time, and the German broke again to level the match.
In the third set, Zverev created two break points and broke to lead 2-0. And he did not lose serve for the remainder of the match to complete the turnaround. He hit 28 winners to 30 unforced errors in the victory. That included 12 aces and seven double faults. Zverev landed 68% of first serves in play and won 82% of first serve points. He won half of his second serve points (16/32) and saved two of three break points in the match. Zverev improves to 15-4 on hard courts this year and can reach his second final of the season on the surface (lost to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open in his first).
11th seed Karen Khachanov is through to his first semifinal in Canada since 2019. The Russian has lost in each of his two previous semifinals in this tournament, once in Toronto and the other in Montreal. He got here with a battling straight sets win over American Next Gen star Alex Michelsen. Khachanov won their quarterfinal in an hour and 46 minutes.
The first set lasted 50 minutes and saw Khachanov coming back from 0-2 down to win six of the next eight games, breaking Michelsen twice. Khachanov saved two set points while down 4-5 in the second set to secure a massive hold and subsequently force a tiebreak. From 3-all in the tiebreak, Khachanov won four points in a row to clinch a 6-4, 7-6 victory. Khachanov has only lost one set in the tournament, and that was in the third-round match against Emilio Nava. He improves to 9-6 on hard courts.
Alexander Zverev vs Karen Khachanov Head-To-Head
Zverev and Khachanov have met seven times at all levels. Zverev leads Khachanov 5-2 and has won each of their last three matches. Khachanov’s last win over the German was in this tournament at the Montreal Masters in 2019.
Alexander Zverev vs Karen Khachanov Prediction
This will be a physical, heavy-hitting battle, and it is Zverev who might nick this. The German has looked sharper in movement and playing with a confident edge. His comeback win against Popyrin was much-needed. But we’ve seen this episode before where Zverev is touted as a huge favorite and tightens up and implodes under pressure. Khachanov has the firepower to trouble him and make things tricky even though the Russian has often failed to live up to the billing in this matchup, losing five times in seven matches. I still think Zverev will win, but it might take him a while yet again to do so. That said, the overs in total games provide a more reliable avenue here.
