Alex De Minaur defeated Frances Tiafoe in the last round to make the second week at his home Slam. It’s the fifth year running that De Minaur has made it to the last 16 of the Australian Open, and he will look to equal his career-best result in Melbourne. He was a quarterfinalist 12 months ago.

De Minaur was simply a level or two above Tiafoe in the last round, breaking him once to take the first set 6-3 in 41 minutes. The Aussie overcame a late wobble in the second set and he needed two attempts to serve for the set, and duly did so to win the set 6-4. Tiafoe had briefly restored parity in the third set after dropping his serve early, but De Minaur struck again in the 11th game, breaking Tiafoe on his fifth break point of the game. He saved a late break back points while serving for the match to prevail 7-5 in the third.

Alexander Bublik is enjoying his best run at the Australian Open. After three consecutive first-round losses, Bublik has reached the fourth round this year without dropping a set. In the first round, he knocked out Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, hitting 47 winners and saving seven of eight break points.

Bublik prevailed over Marton Fucsovics in the second round, reeling off five games in a row from 2-5 down in the third set to win the match in straight sets. He clutched it out again in the third round where he saved a set point in the opening set en route to a 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory against Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

As chaotic as Bublik’s game is, there is a semblance of order to his play and De Minaur might need to go the full distance to take out the in-form Kazakh.
