Aryna Sabalenka Preview
Aryna Sabalenka beat Mirra Andreeva to reach the quarterfinal of the Australian Open for the third year in a row. The two-time defending champion earned her 18th successive win in Melbourne.
Sabalenka was expected to encounter her first acid test of her title defense against the talented Andreeva who had won their previous Grand Slam meeting at the 2024 French Open.
Sabalenka dispatched her younger opponent 6-1, 6-2 in just 63 minutes. She compiled 15 winners and 11 unforced errors. That included three aces and zero double faults.
Sabalenka landed 67% of first serves in play and won 78% of first serve points (28/36). She won 56% of second serve points (10/18) and saved all three break points she faced on her serve.
The Belarusian won 54% of return points (20/37) and 70% of net points (38/54). She converted four of seven break points.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Preview
World No. 32 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova sealed her spot in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open for the fourth time. The veteran Russian beat Donna Vekic 7-6, 6-0 in an hour and 41 minutes.
In the victory, Pavlyuchenkova accumulated 38 winners and 21 unforced errors, hitting 10 aces in the process.
Pavlyuchenkova landed 69% of her first serves in play and won 72% of first-serve points (36/50).
She won 59% of second serve points (13/22) and saved all five break points she faced in the match.
Pavlyuchenkova won 45% of return points (31/69) and 33% of net points (3/9). She converted three of six break points.
Her three previous quarterfinal appearances Down Under ended in defeat, will she make it count this time?

Aryna Sabalenka vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Prediction
Sabalenka stretched her undefeated streak at the Australian Open to 18 matches. There has not been a match where she looked under any threat in the last few days and I don't see her facing too many difficulties against Pavlyuchenkova.
The Russian did win their only Grand Slam meeting, but that was at Roland Garros on clay, and which was during Pavlyuchenkova's mesmeric run to her only Grand Slam final four years ago. Sabalenka has since improved at the majors, making at least the semifinal at every hard-court Slam since the 2022 US Open. Her offensive power remains unmatched and unless she faces an opponent with an otherworldly defense and speed to force her into a multitude of errors, then she'll always be dominant in this continent. Give me Sabalenka for the win in under 18.5 games.
