Kansas City took on the Los Angeles Chargers in their first game of the season. The Chiefs gave up points in every quarter on the way to a 27-21 loss. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 24-of-39 with 258 yards and a touchdown, and also led the rush with 57 yards and a score off six carries. Hollywood Brown was the team’s leading receiver with 10 catches for 99 yards. Travis Kelce hauled in the receiving touchdown among his two grabs for 47 yards.
Game two went similarly for the Chiefs, as they took on the reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch last weekend. Kansas City was all tied up 10-10 by halftime but couldn’t get over the hump in a 20-17 loss. Mahomes was 16-of-29 for 187 yards, one TD and one pick this time while leading the rush again on seven totes for 66 yards and a score. Kelce was the team’s top receiver with four catches for 61 yards. Tyquan Thornton caught the TD among his two receptions for 59 yards as well.
Over on the Giants’ side, their 2025 campaign opened up with a game versus the rival Washington Commanders. New York was able to muster a pair of field goals along the way but ended up falling pretty fast in a 21-6 defeat. QB Russell Wilson was 17-of-37 for 168 yards, while also leading the rushing attack with eight totes for 44 yards. Malik Nabers caught five balls for 71 yards to top the receivers, and Wan’Dale Robinson had six grabs for 55 yards.
Matched up against another rival in the Dallas Cowboys for Week 2, the Giants had a fight on their hands. New York powered out a 21-20 fourth quarter to force overtime, but when the dust settled the Giants had a tough loss 40-37. Wilson was 30-of-41 for 450 yards, three scores and a pick this time. Cameron Skattebo carried 11 times for 45 yards and a score, and Nabers caught nine balls for 167 yards and two scores. Robinson got in on the action with eight grabs for 142 yards and a TD of his own.
I’ll probably stick with the Chiefs here. Kansas City has been beaten up over the first two weeks, suffering a pair of losses that don’t generate a ton of confidence in the offense—or the team as a whole, for that matter. In their loss to Philly, the Chiefs had 294 yards (173 passing) with 17 first downs and a pretty rough 4-of-12 rate on third-down tries. On defense KC did look better, giving up just 216 yards (94 passing) and 16 first downs. In any case, it’d be nice to see the Chiefs find a running game this week—and for someone not named Mahomes to lead the stat sheet.
As for New York, they whipped up a whopping 422 pass yards in an overall sloppy game versus the Cowboys. The Giants accounted for 14 of the 26 penalties total, costing the team 160 yards in the process. This week’s not going to get any easier, though—even at home.
