The Memphis Grizzlies won 27 games last season and enter the sixth year under coach Taylor Jenkins. Obviously, this season is expected to be different with a full year of Ja Morant. He played in just 9 games last season, ending the Grizzlies season before it really started. Marcus Smart seems to be healthy as well, and Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. will remain the reliable sidekicks. Zach Edey brings size and physicality in the post, and he’s a popular candidate for Rookie Of the Year. GG Jackson II earned valuable playing time last season and could become a key piece off the bench.

While the Nuggets, Mavericks, Timberwolves and Thunder steal the headlines, the Grizzlies are that team that could win the West while few are paying attention.

The Dallas Mavericks won 50 games last season, which ended with a surprise NBA Finals berth. Jason Kidd enters his fourth year as head coach and has real expectations now. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving is one of the best scoring duos in the league, and Luka is a strong MVP candidate every year. The Mavs doubled down on their scoring punch by adding Klay Thompson, who isn’t what he was a few years ago, but is still somebody you don’t leave open. PJ Washington really grew up in the playoffs, and Dereck Lively II is coming off a hell of a rookie year. There’s depth questions with the Mavericks, but the offense is there and there’s multiple athletic bigs they can throw at teams. The Mavericks aren’t favored to get back to the NBA Finals, but last season showed they should be in the convo with this core. 

The Mavericks haven’t won 50-plus games in back to back seasons since 2010-11, the year they won the NBA title.

The Dallas Mavericks are coming off a finals berth, so don’t expect to see their key players log decent minutes, if at all. The Memphis Grizzlies played a ton of back of the roster guys last season due to so many injuries, so they’re an experienced squad from top to bottom. That should benefit the Grizzlies in the preseason, as nearly this entire roster has logged big NBA minutes. That’s not the case for every team. I’ll lay the bucket with the Grizzlies.
