The San Diego Padres and the St. Louis Cardinals will meet on Monday night in the opening game of a three‑game National League series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.

San Diego Padres Betting Preview

The San Diego Padres enter Monday’s contest with a 37–33 overall record (2nd in the National League West) and an 18–14 mark on the road. The Padres offense has been inconsistent this season. San Diego has compiled 272 runs scored (30th in MLB), 98 doubles, 73 home runs and a .219 team batting average which ranks an abysmal 30th in Major League Baseball.

The Padres arrive at tomorrow’s game in good form. San Diego has won four of the team’s last six games played this season, including a thrilling 5–4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds earlier this week.

San Diego will turn to right hander Lucas Giolito in this contest. In five starts made this season, Giolito has compiled a 2–1 win‑loss record, a 4.35 ERA, a 1.74 WHIP and 14 strikeouts, while allowing 18 hits and 18 walks in 20.2 innings pitched. Giolito will look to continue his quality pitching in tomorrow’s matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Padres lineup features outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and third baseman Manny Machado. Tatis Jr. has compiled a .282 batting average, 2 home runs, 24 RBIs, 17 stolen bases and a .696 OPS. Manny Machado has tallied 12 home runs, 28 walks, 35 RBIs and a .613 OPS.

St. Louis Cardinals Betting Preview

The St. Louis Cardinals enter Monday night’s matchup with a 38–31 overall record (2nd in the National League Central) and a 19–16 mark at home. The Cardinals arrive at this contest in below average form. St. Louis has lost three of the team’s last four games played this season, including a 9–8 loss to the Minnesota Twins two days ago.

St. Louis will start right hander Dustin May in tomorrow’s game. In thirteen starts made this season, May has compiled a 4-6 record, a 4.21 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and 66 strikeouts, while allowing 71 hits and 20 walks in 72.2 innings pitched.

Shifting our focus to the Cardinals offense, the St. Louis lineup features outfielder Jordan Walker and first baseman Alec Burleson. Jordan Walker has compiled a robust .294 batting average (14th in MLB), 18 home runs (7th in MLB), 16 doubles, 56 RBIs (1st in MLB) and a .902 OPS. Alec Burleson has amassed a .287 batting average, 13 home runs, 51 RBIs (8th in MLB) and an .849 OPS.

Why the San Diego Padres will win.

• Starting pitching. In five starts made this season, Lucas Giolito has compiled a 2–1 win‑loss record, a 4.35 ERA, a 1.74 WHIP in 20.2 innings pitched.

• Offensive upside. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado continue to lead the San Diego Padres lineup.

• Recent momentum. San Diego has won four of the team’s last six games entering tomorrow’s contest.

Why the St. Louis Cardinals will win.

• Home field advantage. The Cardinals have played competitive baseball at Busch Stadium, posting a 19-16 record this season.

• Quality starting pitching. Dustin May has compiled a 4-6 record, a 4.21 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and 66 strikeouts in 72.2 innings pitched.

• Offensive production. Jordan Walker and Alec Burleson provide a strong core to the St. Louis Cardinals lineup.

San Diego Padres vs. St. Louis Cardinals Prediction

In my opinion, this matchup favors the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis starting pitcher Dustin May has pitched rather well recently. More specifically, May has allowed three earned runs or less in three consecutive games, including the Cardinals 7-0 shutout win over New York Mets last week. Additionally, St. Louis has played quality baseball at home posting a 19-16 record. For the reasons just noted, I am backing the St. Louis Cardinals on the moneyline in this game.
