The Blue Jays kicked off their year with a split in four games against the Baltimore Orioles, then came a sweep over the Washington Nationals, followed by a sweep from the New York Mets. The Blue Jays then won three straight versus the Boston Red Sox ahead of a finale defeat. After a two-game split versus the Orioles, Toronto took out the Braves in a set, then fell in a series versus the Mariners. Toronto was swept in three games versus the Houston Astros this past week as well. On Friday versus New York, the Jays came back from a late 2-1 deficit to post a 4-2 victory in the end. Alejandro Kirk had two hits and two RBI, while Jose Berrios went 5.1 clean innings in the start. 

Saturday’s game was postponed due to weather. 

The starting pitcher for game one will be the Blue Jays’ Kevin Gausman. So far this year, Gausman is 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA and 26 strikeouts. 

As a starter for Sunday’s game two, the Jays are rolling with Chris Bassitt. This year, in five starts, Bassitt is 2-1 with a 1.88 ERA over 28.2 innings total. Bassitt is 74-57 with a 3.55 ERA in 205 career games (192 starts) at the MLB level.

New York took victories in three of four against the Tampa Bay Rays last weekend, then lost their first two matchups with Cleveland this week. The Yankees staved off the sweep with a Wednesday win, though. On Friday, New York gave up three runs in the eighth. Carlos Carrasco put up 5.0 clean innings, three hits, two walks, and two Ks as a starter. 

In the Sunday game one, the Yankees will send out Max Fried as a starter. Fried is 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA and 30 strikeouts so far this season. 

It’ll be Clarke Schmidt in the game two starter slot for New York on Sunday. So far this year, Schmidt is 0-1 with a 7.45 ERA in two starts, posting 9.2 innings total. Schmidt is 19-21 with a 4.05 ERA in 85 career games (55 starts).

I’m probably going to lean Yankees for game one. New York’s fortunes get a boost with Fried on the mound. In his last three starts, he’s a smooth 3-0 with just two earned runs on 12 hits and four walks combined over 21.1 innings total. As for Gausman, he’s coming off four earned runs on six hits and three walks in 6.0 innings during a loss to the Astros on April 21. That said, Gausman’s prior two starts were good. He managed just two combined earned runs on 10 hits and no walks over 14.0 innings in that pair.

I’ll lean toward Toronto in game two. Both starters could use a good showing, though. Bassitt took a loss versus Houston his last time up, surrendering four earned in 5.1 innings. Prior to that, however, Bassitt had gone 1-0 with just one earned run over 10.2 innings in two starts. As for Schmidt, he’s coming off a pretty rough outing versus the Guardians on April 21, giving up five earned runs on seven hits and three walks in 4.0 innings of work.
