Vermont Catamounts Betting Preview

The Catamounts have some spotty runs in the books so far, but they’ve played well enough to keep their record above the .500 mark. Vermont opened on a 5-7 run, taking losses to Auburn, Merrimack, Iona, Fairfield, Brown, Yale, and Colgate in that time. The Catamounts hit a much better 8-4 stretch across their next 12 outings, beating Miami Ohio, Elms College, New Hampshire, UMass Lowell, Binghamton, NJIT, Maine, and Albany in that time. The losses otherwise were versus Dartmouth, Bryant, UMBC, and Binghamton, giving the Catamounts a 13-11 record over their first 24 games of the year.

In their Thursday matchup with New Hampshire, the Catamounts jumped out to a 49-30 halftime edge. Vermont kept it going in the second with 30 more points during a 79-59 blowout win. All five starters finished in double-figures for Vermont. They were led by Ileri Ayo-Faleye and his 16 points with five assists and four rebounds. Sam Alamutu managed a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Shamir Bogues added 15 points with eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals, while Nick Fiorillo chipped in 14 points.

Maine Black Bears Betting Preview

Over on the Maine side, they carried a .500 run into the new calendar year. The Black Bears have been doing much better record-wise since then, though. Maine lost to Duke, Quinnipiac, Richmond, Penn, Fordham, Stony Brook, Boston U, and Bryant during an 8-8 stretch through their first 16 outings of the season. The Black Bears have since lost just one game (to Vermont), otherwise taking out Binghamton, Albany, NJIT, UMBC, UMass Lowell, New Hampshire, NJIT, and UMBC in succession for a 16-9 overall run through 25 games so far.

Matched up against the Retrievers in their latest outing, the Black Bears jumped out to a 27-17 halftime edge. Maine hit a 46-33 run the rest of the way and took the win in the end 73-50. AJ Lopez put up 17 points with five rebounds and two assists in the victory. Quion Burns doubled up with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Christopher Mantis had 14 points and five rebounds in 17 minutes of work off the bench.

Why the Maine Black Bears will win

  • Maine has won each of its last eight games against the America East Conference at The Pit in Memorial Gymnasium.
  • Vermont has lost the first half in three of its last four road games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Why the Vermont Catamounts will win

  • Vermont has won each of its last 10 road games against Maine.

Vermont vs Maine Prediction

I’ll lean toward Maine here. The Black Bears didn’t have a ton of issues versus a middling UMBC team in their last game. Maine shot 49.2 percent from the field with a 34-27 rebounding advantage. The only real blemish was the 13 turnovers—but they amounted to just seven Retrievers points. During this 8-1 run Maine has scored 71 or more points in all but one win.

These teams last saw each other back on February 1 in a 55-49 road loss for the Black Bears. Maine ended up with a pretty miserable performance in that one, shooting just 36.5 percent from the field with a 39-31 rebounding deficit. Vermont didn’t do much better shooting-wise on 40.4 percent with 11 turnovers, but it was a good enough effort to bag the win. I like the Black Bears to perform better at home in the rematch and get a little revenge on the Catamounts. Should be a fun one to watch.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Maine Black Bears -2.5
