UAB Blazers Betting Preview

The Blazers didn’t start out the season too well, winning consecutive games just once during their first 11 outings. UAB has since cleaned up its act, however. The Blazers opened on a 5-6 run, beating Southern Miss, SE Louisiana, Auburn-Montgomery, Louisiana, and Prairie View alongside losses to Vermont, High Point, Longwood, Illinois State, Middle Tennessee, and Arkansas State. Since then it’s been a much-improved 5-1 stretch. The lone loss in that time came versus North Texas. Otherwise, it’s been wins over Alabama A&M, Alcorn State, Tulsa, Tulane, and Florida Atlantic for a 10-7 overall record so far this year for the Blazers.

UAB took on Florida Atlantic back on Sunday. In that road matchup, the Blazers went into the locker room with a 40-35 edge. UAB kept the pace from there on a 41-41 run and took the eventual victory 81-76. Tops in scoring was Yaxel Landeborg with a double-double on 22 points, 10 boards, and seven assists with two blocks. Christian Coleman added 15 points with nine rebounds and two steals, while Alejandro Vasquez came off the bench for 14 points, four rebounds, and one assist in 21 minutes of work on the floor.

South Florida Bulls Betting Preview

Over on the South Florida side, they also started out the year on a shaky 5-6 run. Similarly, the Bulls have looked better over the last five games as well. USF beat AR-Pine Bluff, West Georgia, Portland, Wright State, and Stetson with losses otherwise to Florida, Charleston, Middle Tennessee, Loyola Chicago, Utah State, and Bethune-Cookman in those first 11 games. Following a four-game win streak over East Texas A&M, Webber International, East Carolina, and Wichita State, the Bulls took another loss to Tulane for a 9-7 overall record.

Matched up against Tulane over the weekend, the Bulls came out of halftime looking up at a 37-34 edge on the scoreboard. South Florida faded from there on a 39-33 deficit, however, eventually falling 73-70 in the end. Leading team scorer Jamille Reynolds put up 19 points with three rebounds. Quincy Ademokoya added 13 points with three assists and two rebounds in 24 minutes, and Jimmie Williams topped off the bench with nine points and five boards.

Why the South Florida Bulls will win

  • South Florida has won each of its last 13 night games against Conference opponents.

Why the UAB Blazers will win

  • UAB has won eight of its last nine games against Conference opponents.

UAB vs South Florida Prediction

I’ll probably just stay with UAB here. You could make a case either way, though. We should have a fun matchup. The Blazers put up a pretty steady effort in their road win over a decent FAU team, shooting 44.9 percent from the field with just six turnovers. UAB was outmuscled on the boards 46-40 however, and missed eight of their 22 free throws (63.6 percent). The Blazers have hit 75 or more points in eight straight games now (a 6-2 stretch) while holding opponents below 70 points in two of the last three.

As for South Florida, they’ve been scoring quite well themselves over this 4-1 span with 70 or more points in every game and 75 or more in the four wins. The Bulls are giving up quite a bit on defense though—69 or more in three straight—so UAB should have some solid scoring opportunities in this one.

Andrew Jett's Pick: UAB Blazers -1.5
