It’s been a pretty rough season for Seton Hall so far. The Pirates limped to a 5-4 opening across their first nine, then hit an ugly 1-14 run with a lone win over DePaul. Those losses otherwise were versus Oklahoma State, Rutgers, Villanova, Georgetown, Xavier, Providence, Butler, St. John’s, Marquette, Creighton, Providence, DePaul, Butler, and Georgetown in succession. After an OT win over UConn, the Pirates have since lost to Marquette, Xavier, Villanova, St. John’s, Creighton, and UConn in their last six games. That gives Seton Hall an ugly 7-24 record across 31 games this year so far. 

In the UConn road matchup, the Pirates entered the second half with a sizable deficit 43-22. Seton Hall didn’t get any closer on a 38-28 run from there and lost pretty spectacularly 81-50. Leading the way in the losing effort was Prince Aligbe with 15 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Garwey Dual added 12 points with four assists and two rebounds, while Isaiah Coleman put up 10 points with three rebounds in 24 minutes of work. 

Villanova Wildcats Betting Preview

Over on the Villanova side, they’ve had some spotty runs this year but overall they’re not doing too badly. The Wildcats lost to only Columbia, Saint Joseph’s, Virginia, Maryland, and Creighton during an 11-5 opening run. A 1-5 stretch came next though, with losses to St. John’s, Xavier, Georgetown, Marquette, and Creighton. Since then Villanova is 6-3 with losses to Providence, UConn, and Georgetown among wins over DePaul, Xavier, St. John’s, Marquette, Seton Hall, and Butler. That gives the Wildcats an 18-13 record in 31 games so far this season. 

Matched up against Georgetown in a road game last Tuesday, the Wildcats held a 29-29 tie at the break and ended up falling 75-73 after a 46-44 deficit in the second. Leading the team in scoring was Eric Dixon with 24 points and two rebounds. Jordan Longino added 17 points with four assists and two boards, while Tyler Perkins came off the bench for seven points and three rebounds in 22 minutes of work.

I’m going to go with Villanova. The Wildcats need a confidence builder after their tight road loss to Georgetown this past week. Villanova didn’t play terribly in that one, with 45.8 percent shooting, a 34-29 rebounding edge, and just six turnovers. The Wildcats missed five of their 16 free throws though (68.8 percent) and gave up 14-of-31 (45.2 percent) from 3-point range to the Hoyas. The good news is that Villanova is still scoring well lately with 73 or more points in three of the last four games (a 3-1 run). 

These teams last saw each other in the outlier of that quartet, a 59-54 road win for Villanova. Neither team shot well in that one, with the Wildcats hitting 40.5 percent and the Pirates getting 36.4 percent. Villanova also coughed up 14 turnovers for 12 Seton Hall points but powered out the win thanks to a 38-21 second half. There’s lots to clean up for this tournament rematch, but I think the Wildcats can pull it off.
