San Jose State Spartans Betting Preview

Last season the Spartans finished under the .500 mark by five games, going 15-20 overall. San Jose State managed a 7-13 record in the Mountain West Conference as well, resulting in a finish just three spots out of the basement. The Spartans landed ahead of only Wyoming, Fresno State and Air Force in the Mountain West standings. San Jose State finished off the regular season on a 2-6 run, then beat Wyoming in the first round of the conference tournament. After a quarterfinal loss to New Mexico, the Spartans fell to Loyola Chicago in the first round of the NIT on March 19.

This year, the Spartans will get Tim Miles back at head coach but he’ll have none of last year’s starters returning. The good news is that Miles is no stranger to a roster rebuild. He’ll have a couple of key contributors back in the fold however, including sophomore Jermaine Washington (4.4 PPG) and Pasha Goodarzi (2.3 PPG). Top returning scorer Sadraque NgaNga (6.8 PPG) should be able to take on a heavier load as well.

Utah Utes Betting Preview

Over on the Utes’ side, they had a pretty mediocre season in 2024-25. Utah finished a tepid 16-17 overall with an 8-12 run in the Big 12. The Utes landed ahead of Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, UCF, Arizona State and Colorado with that result, far behind the quintet of nationally-ranked squads at the top of the standings. Utah skidded into the postseason, losing four of their final five regular-season outings versus UCF, Arizona, West Virginia and BYU. After an opener loss to UCF in the Big 12 Tournament, the Utes lost to Butler in the first round of the College Basketball Crown tournament on March 31.

Coming into 2025-26, the Utes have a complete rebuild not only in the starting lineup (none of the five starters will be returning) but on the sideline with new head coach Alex Jensen at the helm. Junior Keanu Dawes (8.3 PPG) will be back in the fold at least, following a solid season in which he evolved into a consistent role-player off the bench. Babacar Faye (15.2 PPG) comes in from Western Kentucky this year, and James Okonkwo (6.9 PPG) arrives from Akron among the crop of new faces for the Utes.

San Jose State vs Utah Prediction

I’ll stay with Utah. With roster rebuilds on both sides however, it’s anyone’s guess how this first game is going to look. That said, Utah has to start showing signs of improvement quickly in order to gain some attention for the program. This is a not-too-overwhelming home game to start off with, and I like the Utes to settle in for a nice performance here.

As for San Jose State, they’ve got a pretty good-looking roster on paper at least, and should be able to at least equal last year’s 15-win total if all goes well. There are some questions in the front court and on the bench, however if Miles can develop some of the new faces into active role-players things should work out well. For now though, I don’t think San Jose State will be able to keep a cover pace on Utah in this opener.
