Providence Friars Betting Preview
Providence has been on a pretty choppy run this year so far, and they’ve been unable to stay above the .500 mark in the record column. The Friars opened up on a 7-4 run with losses to Oklahoma, Davidson, Indiana, and Rhode Island. Following losses to St. Bonaventure, St. John’s, Marquette, and UConn, the Friars hit a 4-2 run with wins over Butler, Seton Hall, Georgetown, and Seton Hall again among losses to Creighton and Villanova. It’s been a rough 1-5 run since then with a lone win over Villanova among losses to St. John’s, Creighton, Butler, Xavier, and Georgetown. That gives the Friars a 12-15 record across the first 27 games so far.
In the Georgetown matchup back on Wednesday, the Friars came out of the locker room sporting a 48-31 deficit. Providence didn’t get any closer than that on a 45-41 second half and took the loss 93-72 in the end. Bensley Joseph was the team’s leading scorer with 25 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Justyn Fernandez added 11 points with two boards, and Jayden Pierre finished with 10 points with two assists and one rebound.Â
Marquette Golden Eagles Betting Preview
Over on the Marquette side, they’ve only got a few brief spotty stretches in the books so far. The Eagles won eight straight to start the year, then hit a 1-2 run with a win over Wisconsin amid losses to Iowa State and Dayton. A 9-1 run came next with a lone loss to Xavier amid wins over Butler, Xavier, Providence, Creighton, Georgetown, DePaul, Seton Hall, Villanova, and Butler. Since then it’s been a sketchy 2-4 stretch with wins over only DePaul and Seton Hall in that time. Otherwise, Marquette has fallen to UConn, St. John’s, Creighton, and Villanova over their last six, giving the Eagles a 20-7 overall run through the first 27 games of the year.Â
Matched up against Villanova on Friday, the Golden Eagles were blitzed 46-33 in the first half. Marquette posted a 35-33 deficit the rest of the way in a rough loss of 81-66. Zaide Lowery was the leading scorer in the losing effort, coming off the bench for 25 points with eight boards and one steal in 26 minutes of work. Chase Ross added 11 points with three rebounds and three assists, while Kam Jones chipped in with 10 points and eight assists in 31 minutes.Â

Providence vs Marquette PredictionÂ
I’ll stay with Marquette. That said, the Eagles really need a dominant performance in this one in order to get back on track. The matchup is favorable to get it though. Marquette played a pretty mediocre game against a middling Villanova team in their last outing, hitting 42.1 percent from the field with a 35-29 rebounding deficit. The Wildcats hit 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) from 3-point range in that one, which didn’t help.Â
The good news for Marquette is that they demolished Providence in a road matchup the last time these teams saw each other back on New Year’s Eve. The Eagles scored 27 points off 22 Friars’ turnovers in that one and held Providence to just 34 percent shooting. Marquette should be able to control things in the home rematch.Â
