North Alabama Lions Betting Preview

Last season, the Lions were able to take a big step forward in the record column. North Alabama improved over the 15-17 run in the 2023-24 season with a nice 24-11 overall run. The Lions went 14-4 in the ASUN, tying them with Lipscomb for the regular-season championship. North Alabama closed off the season with a nice 8-1 run (losing to only Lipscomb) and took out Austin Peay and Jacksonville in the first two games of the ASUN Tournament. The Lions fell (again) to Lipscomb in the championship matchup, however. In the first game of the NIT, North Alabama fell versus Bradley 71-62, ending their season on March 19.

North Alabama retains head coach Tony Pujol for his eighth year at the helm in 2025-26. Most notably, he’ll be without a talented Jacari Lane, who left for Texas A&M after three years with the team. Three other double-digit scorers (Daniel Ortiz, Taye Fields and Will Soucie) are off the team via graduation as well. The good news is that the Lions have nine scholarship players returning this season, which should help the early chemistry immensely.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Betting Preview

Over on the Mississippi State side, they managed to match their win total from 2023-24 last season, notching a 21-13 overall record. The Bulldogs posted an 8-10 run in a tough and crowded Southeastern Conference though, falling behind powerhouses Auburn, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Missouri, Ole Miss and Arkansas in the standings. Mississippi State finished off the regular season with a rough 1-4 run including three road defeats, then beat LSU in the conference tourney ahead of a second-round loss to Missouri. After a berth in the NCAA Tournament, Mississippi State took an early exit following a First Round loss to Baylor on March 21.

This season the Bulldogs have a bit of reloading to do in head coach Chris Jans’ fourth season at the helm. Jans will get just four players back from last year, including a lone starter and only two who logged any significant time on the court. Josh Hubbard is the most notable returnee after scoring 18.9 PPG with the team a season ago while leading the league in 3-pointers attempted with 313 total.

I’m likely going to take a stab on North Alabama here. The Lions are coming off their first Atlantic Sun regular-season title (or a share of it, at least) in any sport, leading to a contract extension for Pujol. That said, the team still has a ton of production to replace at the top end of their roster: three 1,000-point scorers are gone this season. Another ASUN championship may be a bit much to ask, but it’s not out of the question if the team can avoid injuries and win the majority of their close games.

As for Mississippi State, they lost a ton of talent and experience during the offseason but by all accounts replaced it with some very smart choices and a top-20 freshman class. The Bulldogs may take a bit to get their chemistry formed, but the indications are positive for a potential return to the big dance this season.
