Iona Gaels Betting Preview
The Gaels had a pretty miserable start to the season, but to their credit they’ve done much better since mid-January. Through 17 games this year Iona was sitting at a pretty miserable 5-12 overall record. The Gaels beat Canisius, Rider, Siena, Fairfield, Mount St. Mary’s and Marist over the next seven games though, before losses to Rider and Quinnipiac. Since then it’s been a 6-1 run for the Gaels with a lone loss to Merrimack among wins versus Manhattan, Niagara, Canisius, Sacred Heart, Manhattan and Quinnipiac again. That puts Iona above the .500 mark again with a 17-16 overall run so far this year.
On Friday versus Quinnipiac, the Gaels went into the break with a 10-point lead. Iona finished with a 42-40 deficit but held on in the end for the win 81-73. Leading the charge was Dejour Reaves with 23 points, six rebounds, two steals and one block in 38 minutes on the floor. Adam Njie put up 21 points with six assists and three rebounds, while Yaphet Moundi doubled up on 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jalen Barr chipped in 11 points and five boards as well.

Over on the Mount St. Mary’s side, they’ve had a couple of choppy runs this year but overall it hasn’t been too bad in the record column. The Mountaineers were sitting at 11-5 back on January 12, then took losses to Rider, Quinnipiac, Siena and Manhattan in succession. Mount St. Mary’s won six of their next seven games versus Merrimack, St. Peter’s, Niagara, Canisius, Saint Peter’s and Rider in succession before losses to Fairfield and Quinnipiac in the next three games. Since then it’s been wins over Marist (twice) and Merrimack in the last three outings, giving Mount St. Mary’s a 21-12 overall run through 33 games overall this year so far.
Matched up against Merrimack, the Mountaineers held a slim 25-24 edge by the break. Mount St. Mary’s kept it going on a 32-31 run from there and ended up winning 57-55 in the end. Tops in scoring for the Mountaineers was Arlandus Keyes with 13 points and four rebounds in 29 minutes of work off the bench.

Iona vs Mount St. Mary’s Prediction
I’m probably going to take a stab on Iona. The Gaels notched a confident win over a better-on-paper Quinnipiac team on Friday, hitting 52.5 percent from the floor with a 38-29 rebounding advantage. Iona shot just 2-of-10 from outside however, and had 10 turnovers for 13 Bobcats points. Defensively, the Gaels gave up just 40.7 percent shooting in a solid all-around effort. Iona has five straight victories now, with 77 or more points scored in each of the last four. They’ve become something of a dangerous team.
These two squads last met back on February 6 in a 70-67 overtime win for Iona on the road. The Gaels committed 16 turnovers for 17 Mountaineers points during a sloppy game (34 total turnovers). That said, it wasn’t too bad offensively for either side, so I like a pretty decent total in this tournament rematch.
